Does Gibbs start a new boat?

If I remember right, the last time we saw Gibbs' basement, he was working on a rocking chair.

Given the final phoof of the episode, do you think Gibbs will start building a new sailboat for Parker and the doc?

" Why does Gibbs make the boats?"

A really good question.

In my opinion, Gibbs started building boats because they let him escape his anger and grief over his losses: Shannon/ Kelly AND Diane. The projects were big enough to occupy many sleepless nights, yet were challenging (using only hand tools!) and appealed to his sense of craftsmanship.

He burned the Diane (where? how?) because he couldn't stand to think of anyone else riding the boat.

Over time, I think his projects have become a way to express the depths of his emotion for someone: Fixing the pipes for Hollis Mann, giving the Kelly to Amira, then Mike Franks' coffin -- all non-verbal ways to say "I love you". Boat-building is no longer therapy, it's now a way to share joy.

If that truly has been the evolution of Gibbs' character, that's a pretty radical change over the last few seasons. It would be a development that's been hinted at, but not outright explained (which the show-runners and writers LOVE to do).

One could think of "A Life Before His Eyes" as being the final piece in that evolution, where Shannon told Gibbs that it's time for him to be at peace with their death. Personally, I think that small exchange ("If we hadn't died, you would have") was the entire character development crux of "A Life Before His Eyes."

So, a Gibbs that no longer needs grief therapy, and for whom a rocking chair simply isn't a big enough project, learns about a troubled boy that wants to carry his respected mother away on a sailboat.

I think Gibbs also realized that Ryan had drawn the picture on the napkin and intentionally left it behind for Gibbs to find. I think his smile was one of appreciation of her subtlety. After all, "There ain't any surprises from 'perfect'".

So does he take the bait?

I hope its a model sail boat if he does ...one that can be used by remote control. Do you find this valuable?

that was a well thoughtout reply callerbear.

You summarised nicely why the whole boat building issue had me confused. I always believed that he did it as a way to manage his grief but because i havent watched the series in chronological order i missed the slow evolution in Gibbs' character.

hmmm...so does Gibbs going sailing off into the sunset with JLC and her son on a new boat he built? only time will tell ;)
