Very interesting...

Here's a link to the poem of the same name:

http://www.love-poems.me.uk/howitt_the_spider_and_the_fly_funny.htm

Just a feeling, but going by this poem, I think someone the team has learnt to trust may turn on them...

OK. So let's dissect this title based on the poem:

1) Flattery used to entice someone, against their better judgment and knowledge, into falling into a trap.
2) There is some hint of sexuality and attraction being used to overwhelm the intellect.
3) Uses affection and previously-existing level of trust to entice someone into falling into the trap.
4) Appeals again to vanity and again hints of sexuality.
5) Lets the target go then swiftly lures them back into danger.
6) The target, thinking danger has passed, falls easily back into danger.
7) The final strike is swift and merciless.
8) Lesson: ignore flattery, for it will get you dead.

Hmmm.

My money's on Hart as a baddie. Anyone else?

Also - one has to wonder - could Mike Franks - someone they all trust because Gibbs trusts him - betray Tony to the cartel in order to achieve his own goal of protecting his family?

I'm thinking that Mike Franks is not going to come out of this debacle looking good...I've always thought he was a reckless cowboy who would get someone hurt, and who wouldn't care if someone took the fall to protect him or his nearest or dearest.

I don't think Gibbs has him on that pedestal he was once on either, especially after the whole 'knocking Tony out and going AWOL' thing.

Yeah I think there'll be some sort of 'bait and switch' where the whole episode will set Gibbs up to be the fly, then it'll turn and it'll be the Cartel that gets trapped in the web.

Thanks for the explanation snoopMary :)

Hart ? She could be , since I've never trusted her and mostly , since I still do not believe her and her redemption .

Franks that betrays Tony or anyone else ? It wouldn't surprised me , at all . As sueKay said , he wouldn't care if someone got hurt protecting or saving him or his family . If it happened , I just hope that Gibbs threw him out of his life , finally !

Tanks for the explaination snoopmary, I didn't know this poem.

My money is on Hart but maybe that's because I never liked her. I hope Franks doesn't betray Tony as he is going to need the help to get Gibbs out of his mess (not that Tony is incompetent but that's a very big mess) but if he does I hope Gibbs lets him know in uncertain terms that they are done. I don't think Franks would be so cold as using one of the members of team Gibbs just to save his own skin (or even of his family)

No prob, babe.

I think Franks is an 'expediency' guy - use 'em when you need 'em then chuck 'em when you're done. I just don't trust him; ever since he conked Tony on the head to go off after Arkady. To me, that was the moment that highlighted the darker side of Franks - he doesn't care who gets hurt as long as he wins. He doesn't care about anyone not immediately relevant to him.

There was a callous disregard there that I personally found chilling.

I can see him throwing Tony under the bus and honestly not understanding why anyone up to and including Gibbs would object.

No Mike Franks is just old school...conking Tony on the head was just his easiest way to get out of there and on to what he needed to do..plus Tony was really taken out easily by an old man...Tony's explanation was that there must have been at least tow groups to take him out just showed how much Tony wasn't doing his job and how easy it was for 60+ guy to get one over. Franks is Franks...he does what he thinks is right...you can like him or not like him...as far as Franks doing something to Tony in Mexico...don't think that is going to happen...hope Tony is smarter this time around and realizes that when Franks is out for something all the rules get broken...as allies they could be good together...and it could be funny in a light hearted way if done right......

Mike Franks isn't old school; Fornell, like Gibbs, is old school - tough love, harassment but deep loyalty to the thin blue line. Mike Franks has an anger-management and impulse-control problem that when combined with his willingness to sacrifice others to achieve his goals, threaten the safety of anyone forced into working with him. You said it yourself: "when Franks is out for something all the rules get broken". Mike doesn't care about anyone beyond his family and to an extent, Gibbs. He has no relationship with Tony and therefore has no reason to consider him as anything beyond a disposable, temporary asset. It's callous and all about expediency.

How is Tony's attempt to save face connected to Mike's choice to thwack him into unconsciousness so Mike would be able to storm off to go kill somebody? Answer: It's not! Why in the seven levels of hell would Tony EXPECT Franks to be the one to attack him? This is someone Gibbs trusts; Tony would therefore trust him too. He'd expect the threat to be coming from OUTSIDE. So rather than dividing his resources to guard his back against the person he's supposed to be protecting, his focus would be exclusively on the external threat than the internal one.

Was it funny how Tony tried to deflect out of embarrassment that a retiree bopped him one and put him down for the count? Yes. Does it mean Tony wasn't doing his job? No. It means the person he was supposed to be protecting attacked him without warning. It means Franks is willing to break faith with Gibbs when he needs to in order to achieve his goals. That's chilling - that someone Gibbs trusts so much would betray his trust so easily and would hurt someone he cares for without a second thought.

That's why we can't trust Mike Franks right now - read the poem. It's basically saying, "be careful who you trust, don't believe what they tell you".

I agree that Tony was doing his job, he didn't leave Franks , he paid attetion to external threats, he did everything he could except roping him to a chair (which in the NCIS world seems to be the only method when you protect someone).
However I still don't beleive Franks to view Gibbs ' team as expendable or disposable. Do I think him capable of knocking Tony down to do things his way even if it puts them into more danger ? Yes . Do I think him capable of having him killed (knowing that Gibbs care for Tony and Franks for Gibbs) ? No.
Franks is old school but a school even older than Gibbs or Fornell, he is more like a cow boy.
