Again I think its symptomatic of the writing quality this season. The previous seasons regarding Gibbs not telling Duck about his family or Ducky not telling Gibbs about Jordan I can understand; but you're right it was odd behavior from Ducky about the Martha Stewert comment made to Gibbs. I thought it was just me that's why I never posted anything about it before, I didn't want anyone to think I was imagining anything. But I have a hard time buying that Ducky of all people wouldn't have mentioned to Gibbs or Abby that his beloved mum had passed? C'mon writers you couldn't have have come up anything better than that nonsense? Ducky is the only that Gibbs confides in when he has moments of doubt or inner turmoil, and Ducky knows that just as he knows Gibbs will always be there for him. Aside from the cemetary scene with Ducky and Abby and the last scene with Gibbs and Ducky ; which were very touching. Iliterally fell asleep watching this episode....Something that has NEVER happened to me while watching this show, granted I'm fighting a cold right now but still. Do you find this valuable?

Actually, I probably would have had more of a problem with Ducky keeping his mother's death a secret if the writers hadn't thrown in the line about Ducky "being surrounded by death" on a daily basis. I'm glad that you did this post because the Ducky and Gibbs relationship has always been one of my favorites because the two are so different, but I think this shows that in grief these two are at least somewhat similar. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. I could also understand Ducky's behaviour being mourning and suffering from the death of his mother. As far as we know, she was the only person he lived with and there was a strong bond between both of them. Each time he mentioned her he always talked very lovingly about her. I think though we saw him with a fresh outer appearance and a smile he still has a lot of grief in his heart and the new outfit is just an attempt to handle the new situation. Like Gibbs, Ducky is a man who doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeves.

I was disappointed to, to read that Ducky hadn't told the team of his mothers passing. But some people like to mourn in private first. Perhaps Ducky felt he was imposing on the others with their work load or something. A change in clothing, as you say, may well be his way of moving on. Perhaps his mother bought him all those bow ties and he never really wanted to wear them? But he did out of respect for her. I think the bow ties have become a trade mark with him and I hope he will start wearing them agin at some stage. Gibbs use to wear a tie in the early days on occassions..now he wears polo or tee-shirts. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I see a slightly different perspective. Mrs. Mallard was dying of Alzheimer's. At that point you mourn the passing of the personality before the body leaves. So he had probably already done a lot of his grieving as her personality left her especially when he came to the point of needing to put her into a nursing facility. When the body finally catches up to the personality, it is at times a relief, though you still miss that final tie. If he dressed the same way as he always had, it increased the likelihood of recognition in later stages. I feel to some extent he may also have felt "trapped" caring for an aging parent and didn't have time to pursue his own interests, though he did manage to find company to go to the opera and other events. But with a situation like his, you don't want to necessarily drag another person into that kind of scenario on a permanent basis. But I am still a little surprised he didn't tell Gibbs at least. And I suspect that he's now glad that the news is out and he doesn't have to directly say the words to everyone.

Just to add to Windykat's comment, when you know someone with alzheimers, it's not necessarily a bad thing that they're released into death. The disease is just as bad as cancer, only you're losing your brain, not good cells per se.
So perhaps one explanation as to why Ducky did not display more mourning was because he felt it was a release for her and she had had a good long life, so there is nothing to mourn to the extent.

Hi Bells,
Sorry to disconfirm your view on the bow ties, I know you haven't seen the episode, but he actually started wearing ties cos of a gf. Gibbs says at the end "so it's the gf who you're wearing the ties for" or sth along those lines.

Ah, well, you may be disappointed as he says "she's quite a bit younger". And her name is Sophie :) .

Piece of Trivia. Character's name is Sophie and a real estate agent.

David McCallum has a daughter named Sophie, whom I understand, is a real estate agent.

As we well know the writers LOVE to put that sort of thing into the scripts!!

I'm not. I think it's cool. I don't see any reason why two consenting adults couldn't get together because of age.

I have just begun to rewatch NCIS from the very first episode and it is interesting to see how all the characers have changed and evolved from those early days. Ducky not only looks 10 years younger but his demeanour is so much younger and fresher than it was 7 years ago. I think that he may be ready for a serious relationship, he certainly deserves one after caring for his Mother. But one question that I have is Mrs Mallard was 98 - nearly one hundred, Ducky said, when she passed away, that makes him a fair age doesn't it? Do we know how old Ducky is? Depends on how old she was when Ducky was born.

I saw Jurisdiction and all I can say is, Gibbs is really hot, but I'd rather be comforted by Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. At least Sheldon tries. Do you find this valuable?

I agree with both you and windykat. Ducky has likely already been grieving for quite some time, as he really had lost the woman he knew as his mother long before the actual death of her body. As a friend (whose mother died recently having been placed in nursing care a few years ago because her dementia made it impossible to care for her at home) told me recently, the woman in the nursing home had not been "mother" for the past year, I lost the person I knew as my mother 2 yrs. ago) Something I will have to face in a few years in my own family, which I will never for ready for.

Personalities can mesh even with a considerable age difference. And Ducky has never seemed as old in "attitude" and his outlook in life as he does in "real life/real age", if that makes any sense ;) But I think that once you're past a certain age, I'm not sure the age difference matters as much. A thirty year-old and a 12-yr. old I can see problems with , but a 30 yr.-old and and 58 yr. old or whatever, not so much.

I can empathize with both of you my grandmother who passed away from the disease at the age of 98 was very difficult at times and it made things difficult for the family in general. Her 110th birthday was on St Patrick's day.
