First of all, I love that Abby shows her feelings as a counterpart to Gibbs and Ziva who mostly repress their feelings.
I'm nevertheless waiting for the Abby arc to come. Maybe some of her strange behavior will be clarified then.
Abby isn't that needy, whiny character per se. But we still don’t know too little about her childhood. I think her behavior in "Last Man Standing" points out she needs her familiar surroundings - the familiar persons and her familiar lab. Maybe she has a fear of loss?
Weren't there some hints that her childhood wasn't that easy? At Christmas time a lot of people remember their childhood, maybe this is the reason why the writers made her act out her feeling -as they did - as for Santa for example. There she seemed to be that little needy kid she once was.
But you are absolutely right Margy, Abby has to mature either - for the show’s sake. Let's wait for the Abby arc.

Margy, we are completely agreed on the points you raised in your blog.

I was starting to absolutely hate Abby in S6, her behavior was just so irritating and unrealistic it did kind of pull the show down a bit. "Silent Night" was the last straw and I wanted to give her a good kick. If anything good came out of it at all, though, Pauley did good with the material and can play the "whimpering little sister" role with a degree of conviction.

However, in S7, I noticed that they're strting to clean that up a bit. Abby's more mature than I think I have seen her so far (perhaps someone complained?) and honestly, I love it. Her music and her clothes are still there, but she comes across more as a quirky professional than a child genius.

For example, in the "Inside Man", when she asked Ziva if she wanted to come to girl's night, it felt like abby really understood how she might feel and knew that giving Ziva a hug wasn't going to "fix" everything. In "Power Down", Abby had the drive to go through those boxes of fingerprints and have the team help her. I didn't see her go crying to Gibbs all season (almost there in the episode where McGee and Tony get arrested, but she was holding on), and in fact, if anything, her relationship with Gibbs has far mellowed to a sort of more natural phase.

We have still got the Abby moments, like her trying to replicate her cousin's cranberry sauce in "Child's Play", but its not so overblown as the cupcake, and certainly makes a heck of a lot more sense.

Let's have more of this Abby in the future. They can keep her dress and everything, but let'd allow Abby to grow up just a little bit, from six year old to ten, shall we say?

I totally agree mona, one of the things about abby's character is that is such a clear contrast from the other members of the team, but for me that is one of the best things about her, is her childishness, but still being an aldult, like abby knows that her team members do see some really bad things, but that is contrasted to abby, which IMO is done both for us, and for them, a really good example of this, is when McGee killed his first person in probie, abby trying to help McGee, in her very un-serious ways, and saying 'someone needs a hug' at the end, was classic abby, but then she knows when to stop, at least then she did, but I totally agree with you margyw, I was almost embrassed to watch that scene in silent night, that abby could behave like that, but abby's hope for lack of a better word, is rather an inspration for the rest of the team, so I do think that it is important, although I do really want an abby arc, not just an ep

I think my favorite incarnation of Abby is from "Yankee White." She was Gothy, upbeat, but not childish as they too often write her. So I COMPLETELY agree with the blog entry. Do you find this valuable?

Gee...mmmm... Your last sentence Margy about Abby's character destroying ncis doesn't sit too well. Sorry mate, but I find that to be over the top and a tad scarmongering... 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
