GOOFS
Feb 12 2009, 1:51 PM EST
UntouchableApproaching a house, Ziva says to Tony, "It's my specialty." If she learnt English in Israel, or in the UK, she would say, "speciality," with the extra i added to make a fourth syllable. And it's obviously her first time in America, since she does have difficulty with idiomatic American English. Do you find this valuable?

In the series when Ziva first came to NCIS this was one thing that made her adorable.. she always makes mistakes when trying to express her mind. Example, while Gibbs is questioning a suspect Ziva's comment was "Like shooting ducks in a pond", Instead of the real quote: "Like shooting ducks in a barrel". Ziva replies.. well that's a stupid saying, why would ducks be in a barrel? It has been like this since she started with NCIS. It is a "Ziva thing". They are trying to teach her our expression, which when you think about it, Ziva does make sense when she comments about our sayings we have acquired. But, she definitely is getting the hang of it.

Another Goof I ave noticed is that sometimes Ziva uses contractions, and sometimes she doesn't. In one episode tony asks "why don't you use contractions?" "what are contraptions?" But ziva does use them. in later seasons they've tried to remedy that, but once in a while she'll use one. it's funny how we catch little things like this. But you must catch things like that all the time, sandman. =]

But it's always the idioms, never the hard-down meaning of the language. She's gotten better over the years, but she has occasional lapses that seem, this far into the series, out of place. Still, most people learning a second language have occasional lapses, and whole days when they can't remember a single word of the second language. I've experienced that several times. Ziva sometimes reminds me of Mr. Data in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In Season One, he used a few contractions, but after Season Two he was unable to do so, al though his evil twin could do it as a matter of course. Do you find this valuable? |

It takes a really long time for foreigners to handle contractions comfortably in any language, and of course idioms are another kettle of fish. Even with a good accent and pronunciation a foreigner often gives him/herself away due to the lack of contractions, when speaking not to mention lack of expressions or if they do, then they're generally very hackneyed. Until a foreigner has been several years in a country, the manner of speaking tends to be very "textbook", i.e. excessively precise and stereotyped, often employing archaic forms of the language in question.

I once heard a friend say, other languages say what they mean and mean what they say. We have so many words that have several meanings, words spelled alike, sound different, etc. We also have our slang words which confuse my friends from other countries. I did try to teach my friends a few for they do have a hard time and feel left out. I have deep sympathy for they are sometimes made of fun and some people do it on purpose. If they have friends like Ziva does at work jokingly helping Ziva through all the different jargon, that is a good thing. Sometimes I have trouble understanding some of the sayings that are out there. I agree with you Sorgina.

I know what you mean sorgina. I was talking to one of my spanish-speaking friends at school, and she was making fun of me because my spanish sounded really bad AND proper! =] Haha appreciator, I didn't even think twice about "shooting ducks in a barrel". how sad is that? and sandman, data is my favorite character on star trek! [my dad is a star trek fan. each of my family members have a specific show they like: my dad, stargate or star trek, mom is crossing jordan and doctor who, and i'm ncis and burn notice, among others!]
