He says which gun he used in "Kill Ari Part 1" but I'm drawing a blank as to which one he said it was... I will research it and try to let you know. I do remember him saying it in Abby's lab when they were doing the ballistics trying to figure out the rifle Ari had used.

Yeah, the "kate" was the gun, but he realized what the signifigance meant by the type of ammo Ari used.... It was the same ammo Gibbs had used. (Ari was one sick puppy messing with Gibbs head.)

I watched Kill Ari Part 1 tonight. The gun Gibbs used in USMC and has in his basement was a Marine M40 A1 Sniper rifle. The Bravo 51 (Kate) was the gun Ari used, with the same ammo as Gibbs had used when he was a Marine. Hope that clears everything up for you! :-)

the Marine M40 A 1 is a military version of the remington model 500. both that and the 'kate' bravo 51 used (and still do) .308 lapua in moly coated boat tail full metal jacket rounds. 3  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

I've not seen that particular episode but, The M40A1 is actually based on a Remington Model 700 with a Unertl 10x power scope. Excellent examples can be found at Texas Brigade Armory or at Iron Brigade Armory. Mike at Texas Brigade built me one about 10 years ago.

BTW, I just watched the last episode of the Memorial Day Marathon, pretty good except Mark Harmon's script writer got it wrong, GySgt Carlos Hathcock had ninety-three (93) confirmed kills, not 39. Cpl. Chuck Mawhinney was slightly more prolific with 103 confirmed, but Gunny Hathcock was involved in the rescue of other Marines for a burning Amtrac, which resulted in him sustaining severe burns over his body and accelerated the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, which forced him out of combat. Gunny Hatcocks legend comes from the missions he performed and the conditions he preformed them under. I had the great fortune to speak with him once before he died

Semper Fi Gunny.

That is an honour indeed. I read this on wikipedia:
The North Vietnamese Army even put a bounty of $30,000 on his life for killing so many of their men. Rewards put on U.S. snipers by the N.V.A. typically amounted to only $8.[5][3] The Viet Cong and N.V.A. called Hathcock Lông Trắng, translated as "White Feather", because of the white feather he kept in a band on his bush hat.[6] After a platoon of trained Vietnamese snipers were sent to hunt down "White Feather", many Marines in the same area donned white feathers to deceive the enemy. These Marines were aware of the impact Hathcock's death would have, and took it upon themselves to make themselves targets in order to preserve the life of the true "White Feather".

A legend and a hero in it's true form.

If you remember, the sniper in "One Shot, One Kill" always left a white feather as his callng card, a clear allusion to Sgt Hathcock. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Great information "Recon" and "Berk 62"... It is amazing the talent the sniper has, either you have it, or you don't. I have had the pleasure of taking up target shooting, please don't anyone get upset.. but I actually handled an AR-15. It is amazing, and that isn't even a snipers best friend. I went to a funral of a soldier who was a specialist. I stood alongside his buddies that went on the mission with him when he died. These are amazing gentlemen. I do mean gentleman. Actually the way they stood by each others side was "regal". I wish I had their tenacity. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

didn't read 'em all but the first. But the weapon of choice is a .308 Winchester. Snipers use shells that they make by hand to ensure the same weight and velocity each fire. The .308 has a very flat trajectory and high velocity. It can be accurate to 2000 yards. There are new ones though that can be fired accurately at over a mile. Snipers usually work in teams though. One spotter and one shooter. If working alone, I would use a .308. Clear that up for ya?
