They had known each other for years, working side by side, day in and day out. They were friends, good friends, but in the beginning it was more of a father/daughter relationship. There was always a hint of flirtation, but they both just saw it for what it was, just fun. Because of all that he had lost, it was difficult for him to express his true feelings. Ever since losing Shannon and Kelly, he had shut the door on the possibility of ever loving someone that deeply, and once again having his heart broken. Sure, he tried to move on, but never allowing himself to truly grieve for what he had lost, his three subsequent marriages had all ended in divorce. He just didn’t think he could survive that again.
Little by little though, before either of them realized it, their relationship began to change. The looks that passed between them became longer, and just his touch, however innocent, made her weak in the knees. As for him, every time he saw her, especially walking into her lab, he’d just stop and watch her, unnoticed, since he was so good at sneaking up on her unexpectedly. Usually after a few seconds, though, she’d notice him and run to him, giving one of her hugs that he was sure would knock him off his feet one day.
They both tried to deny that their was anything had changed in their relationship. Even Ziva, about as unromantic as they come, once commented to her as Jethro left the room “Abby, is there something going on with you and Gibbs?” Abbs, who NEVER got flustered, stammered “Wh-What are you talking about?”, to which Ziva replied “Abby, the man is obviously head over teakettle in love with you”. Abbs, looking totally confused, which she had accepted as normal when talking to Ziva, said “I think you’re mixing your idioms again Ziva. Do you mean head over heels or ass over teakettle?”. “YES!”, Ziva exclaimed, slightly embarrassed that even after all this time in the U.S., she still occasionally got mixed up. Abbs didn’t mind, though. Although their relationship had its rocky moments, she had come to see Ziva as part of the “family”, which is what her co-workers were to her.
Eventually Jethro and Abbs decided to try just casual dating (“just friends“, they told themselves). Because of their histories, anything more terrified both of them. One Friday night, as they were at a local pizza parlor, they had just gotten their food and were just starting to eat, Tony came walking through the door. “Hey guys! You went out for pizza and didn’t invite me? I’m hurt! Push over Abbs“. Sitting down next to her, he reached for a slice. Before he could pick it up, Jethro picked up his fork, put it on top of Tony’s hand, and just gave him the stare that Tony was all too familiar with, since it was almost always followed by a slap to the head. Having second thoughts, he dropped the pizza, looked at his watch, and said “Whoa, look at the time! Here it is, Friday night and I’m sitting here with you two? I’ve got a reputation with the ladies to protect!”. Standing up, he grabbed a slice of pizza before Gibbs could stop him. Taking a big bite, and with his mouth still full, he bent over, kissed Abbs on the cheek, and said “Bye guys!” Wiping the pizza off her cheek, Abby yelled “Tony!!”, and slapped him on the butt before he could make it out the door. Still laughing she said, “Did I get it all off? Jethro replied, “Not quite. Come here.” As she scooted to the other side of the table to sit next to him, he picked up a napkin, and as he was wiping the remaining sauce off of her cheek, his finger just barely brushed her cheek, but it was enough to send shivers down her spine. Their eyes met for a moment, and finally Jethro said “So, are you ready to go?” Trying not to sound too eager, Abby said “Just give me a minute”. As she walked into the ladies room, she could feel her heart practically beating out of her chest. As she splashed some cold water on her face, she looked at her reflection in the mirror and said to herself “Get yourself together Abigail!”
Nothing happened that night. As Jethro drove Abby home, they sat in silence. Usually when he drove, Abby felt like she was a passenger in a car in the Indy 500. Tonight, though, he seemed to be driving much slower than usual, as if he was trying to extend the evening as long as possible. When they finally pulled up to her apartment building, she said “So, do you want to come in?”. After pausing for a moment, he took her hand, kissed it, and said “Abbs, if I come in tonight, you won’t get rid of me till Monday!”. Turning to open the car door, she tried to hid her disappointment, she said “Okay, ’night” Suddenly she felt his hand on her arm. She turned back to him, and he leaned in and taking her face in his hands, he said “Abbs, I don’t want to rush this. You’re too special to me”. A single tear rolled down her cheek, and she said “Then you think we might have a chance?” Looking at her, she could see that even the tough as nails Marine was getting misty-eyed, and he said “Abigail Scuito, I respect you too much to lead you on if I didn’t think that this might turn into something. I just want both of us to be sure about this. If this does turn into something, it won‘t just be casual, at least not for me”. Whenever he called her Abigail, she knew that, even more than usual, he meant what he said. They began going out regularly, but before long, they realized that they didn’t need other means of entertainment or people, they were both content just being together. After about three months, the moment that Abby had been waiting for finally arrived, and she realized that Jethro was right, as usual. It was worth the wait.
That was a year ago. Since that night, they had been spending most of their non-working hours together, mostly at Jethro’s house. Despite her image, Abby was as much of a homebody as he was. Gradually, since their first night together, more and more of her belongings made their way into the house. The day that Jethro realized how serious things were becoming between them was the day that he sat down on the couch after a long day, and heard a farting noise! He knew it hadn’t come from him, and he felt like he was sitting on something. He reached underneath him and realized that he had sat down on Bert, Abby’s farting hippo! Abby, who had been in the kitchen, came in when she heard Jethro laughing like she had never heard him laugh before. Before she could see him, she called out “WHAT is so funny?!?” As she walked into the living room, she could see him, struggling to catch his breath from laughing so hard, and holding up Bert, said “I guess this means you’re planning on sticking around, huh?” Sitting on his lap, she said “Just try to get rid of me, mister!”. “Hold that thought”, he said “I‘ll be right back“, taking her off his lap and seating her on the couch. She said “Leroy Jethro Gibbs, what are you up to?” “You’ll see!, just be patient!” he called out. “Look who’s talking”, she muttered under her breath. “I heard that!” he said. “HURRY UP!”, she called back. Just as she said that, he came walking out of the bedroom with a very serious look on his face. He moved the coffee table away from the couch were Abby was sitting, still trying to figure out what was going on. For a fleeting moment, she let herself think that this was the moment she had been waiting for. Don’t be stupid, Abby, she thought to herself. Things are great the way they are. DON”T BLOW IT by getting pushy now!
She snapped out of her thoughts as she saw Jethro kneeling in front of her. Taking her hand, he cleared his throat and said the words he had thought he’d never say again. “Abigail Scuito, would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”, and with that, slipped a simple ring on her finger, knowing she cared more about the sentiment than the token of that sentiment. He no sooner got the words out then she threw herself at him, knocking him backwards to the floor, and said “YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!” all the while smothering him with kisses.
The next day, they arrived at the office together, as usual, but instead of going their separate ways for the day, they walked hand in hand to the bullpen, where Tony, as usual, was the first to speak up. “Hey guys! What’s going on? Jethro, showing no expression, said “What makes you think something’s going on, Tony?” “Well, either something’s up, or Abby’s Caf-Pow has a little extra pow today!”. Abby could stay silent no longer “We called Ducky and Jimmy. We want to tell all of you at once. You’ll just have to wait till they get here!“ No sooner had she finished the sentence than the pair walked off the elevator. “Jethro, Abigail, what’s all the excitement? With that, Abby couldn’t control herself any longer. “WE”RE GETTING MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!”
As soon as the celebration started to die down, Abby pulled Ducky aside and said “Ducky, you know that I’m not much for tradition, but would you give me away?” “Abigail”, he replied, removing his glasses to dab his eyes, “After watching how happy you’ve made Jethro, it would be an honor!, just tell me when and where”.
“Well, we don’t want to wait, so it’ll be a week from Saturday. It’s going to be small, just our “family” here, so we’re going to have it at the house, in the backyard“. “I’ll be there!”, said Ducky. With that, he went back to join the others, and Abby went to Tim‘s desk, where he was sitting by himself. “Tim”, Abby said “Please tell me that you’re happy for us”. “Abbs, do you even have to ask? I‘m your friend. Of course I‘m happy for you” . Pulling her into his arms he said quietly “I’ve seen how happy you are together. That’s all I’ve ever wanted for you. For both of you. You deserve it.”. With that, Jethro walked over to them and said, reverting back to “the boss man”, as Abby affectionately called him “Okay people, enough celebrating for now. Back to work!” Walking over to his bride, he said “That includes you, Mrs. Gibbs!” “Yes sir!” she said playfully, throwing him a salute, and with that, she headed back to her lab, happier than she ever remembered being. As she got to the elevator, she stopped, turned around and said “YOU CALLED ME MRS. GIBBS!! AHHHHH!!!“ With that, she ran back to hug him one more time. Before heading back to Autopsy, Ducky pulled his friend aside and said “Jethro, I do believe this is the happiest I’ve ever seen you.” “Duck”, he said “This time its for keeps!”
The day that Abby had been dreaming of for so long finally arrived. She awoke snuggled safe in the arms of the man she had loved for so long, and realized that she would never have to wake up alone again. Not wanting to leave their bed, but knowing that people would be arriving soon, she made her way into the kitchen to start the coffee. Better than any alarm clock, the pot was only about ½ full when Jethro joined her. “I knew that would wake you up!” Abby said as he embraced her, nuzzling her neck. “Couldn’t think of a more fun way?” he teased. “If I did that, we’d never get out of bed! Now get in the shower, Mister! It‘s getting late!” Turning her to him for one more embrace, he said “Getting pretty bossy there, aren’t ya?. I know one way we could save some time. Wanna join me?” “Not right now, my love. The last thing I want when I’m with you is to be distracted by time, or anything else. Besides, we have the rest of our lives to enjoy each other”.
An hour later later, they were both dressed. Before everyone began to arrive, Jethro pulled his bride to him and said “You ready?”. She replied “Since the day we met. But first, I have to tell you about this dream I had last night. It was Shannon! She said that she came to tell me that she sees how happy we are together, and that she was grateful that we found each other. She said that since you lost her and Kelly, it’s like a big part of you died that day too. Then she told me, Abby said tears in her eyes “But now, Abby, it’s like he’s living again, and I want to thank you for loving him in a way that we can’t anymore, and tell him to not grieve for us anymore. We’ll all be together again one day”.
Jethro struggled for a moment to regain his voice, and with a single tear running down his cheek “How lucky am I to have found two such amazing women in my life?”, to which Abby responded, giving him a tender kiss “We’re the lucky ones. Okay, NOW I‘m ready. Oops! Wait a minute! I almost forgot something!”. With that, she went to the refrigerator to her bouquet of black roses and said “Okay, last chance! Any second thoughts?” to which he replied “I’ve never been so sure of anything in my entire life.”
They walked out to the garden where all of their friends were already gathered. As she took his arm, she said “Duckman, you’re looking more dapper than ever!”. After looking her over, he cleared his throat and said “Why thank you Abigail!” She said “It’s the dress, isn’t it? You know I love black!”. With that she looked to the end of the garden path where Jethro was waiting with the Justice of the Peace he had found to perform the ceremony. She looked at him and mouthed “TONY?!?!” Jethro just grinned, shrugged his shoulders and signed “Why not?”
After taking a moment to recover from that surprise, she and Ducky made their way to where Jethro was waiting for his bride, happier than he remembered being in a long time. As he and Abby joined hands, Tony cleared his throat and began “Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve gathered you all here today to reveal the name of the murderer!”. As Gibbs gave him “the look” that was almost always followed by a headslap, Tony gave HIMSELF a headslap and said “Sorry boss, Mrs. Boss!”, and finally got serious (as serious as Tony gets). As he got to the part of the ceremony where he said “If anyone knows why these two should not be joined in matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace”, all eyes turned to Tim. “What? No, I’m good”. Abbs turned to him, signed “I love you”, blew him a kiss, then turned back to Tony and said “Continue”. The ceremony soon concluded, and after a few hours of celebration with their friends, they were finally alone for the first time as man and wife.
As they sat on the couch together, both tired from all of the days events, Jethro turned to his bride and asked “No regrets?” “Not a one”, Abby responded “But check back with me in another 40 or 50 years!” Jethro chuckled “How long do you think I’m gonna live, babe?” “Forever!” she said “You better!”. With that, she got up and said “I’m gonna go put on something more comfortable” When she came back a few minutes later dressed in an oversized t-shirt and a pair of boxer shorts, Jethro looked at her and said “That’s the first time I’ve ever heard a woman say that and actually mean it!”. With that he got up and picked out a CD, put it in the CD player, but before he pushed play, he said “Mrs. Gibbs, may I have this dance? As the introduction to the song started, he said “I heard this song on the radio, and it says everything I want to say to you tonight“. He took his bride in his arms and they started to dance.
You are so beautiful
You are so beautiful
Can't you see
You're everything I hoped for
You're everything I need
You are so beautiful
As they danced, they gazed into each others eyes the entire time. As the song ended, Jethro picked up his new bride, carried her to the bedroom, and began what would be a wonderful life of days and nights together.
