EPISODE RANKINGS: SEASON THREE

24th March 2010

These are my rankings of the Season 3 episodes. It is quite hard to rank, and is more generally in clumps rather than a direct 1-24. Unlike other seasons, this is the only one in which I thought every episode was good. Other seasons will have episodes ranked 'decent', 'OK' or one with the 'Not good'. There are many unique plots in this season.

  1. Mind Games, an excellent episode following from the Kill Ari saga
  2. Bloodbath, an excellent Abby centred episode in which a great mystery is involved.
  3. Family Secret, a very good plot and Gibbs would slap Tony silly if he broke Chain of Evidence!
  4. Frame-Up, the first in many good DiNozzo being framed episodes, this one I like and is very good.
  5. Probie, the first very good McGee centred episode, again I like.
  6. Under Covers, a very good episode, not just for the new relationship but for the unique plot.
  7. Kill Ari (Part 1), a very good resolution to the Kate death saga, nicely paced and intriguing.
  8. Ravenous, a very good episode, great ending, occasionally slow in a few parts.
  9. Bait, a very good episode, extremely unique, and very unpredictable.
  10. Head Case, a good episode, with quite a few good moments.
  11. Boxed In, a Tiva episode, not that it would have been called then, but a good unique plot.
  12. Hiatus (Part 1), I found the Gibbs past story line far more interesting than the case. Good.
  13. Iced, primed with a manly McGee, this is an interesting and
  14. Light Sleeper, a good episode, with another unique plot.
  15. Model Behaviour, a good episode, while not predictable, I didn't seem to think it was great.
  16. Silver War, a good episode involving the introduction of Ziva and Civil War case.
  17. Kill Ari (Part 2), a little predictable except for the killing of Ari, good though.
  18. Untouchable, a good episode filled with mystery.
  19. The Voyeur's Web, an interesting and good episode.
  20. Jeopardy, a very unique plot which is twisted with another unique plot, good.
  21. Honour Code, a nice and good episode which has a parallel with Gibbs and his soon to be revealed daughter.
  22. Hiatus (Part 2), concentrating more on the case was a downside for me.
  23. Switch, a good episode, with many twists, and in the end the wife did it.
  24. Deception, a unique episode in terms of the team dynamics, but only just good plot.

TONY IN SEASON TWO

26th March 2010

Tony in Season Two is much more refined. Obviously this is because the writers took some time to perfect each of the characters traits and looks. Tony is more of the Tony we know today, he uses movie quotes much more. He lives the life of a player with an expensive car, which aren't really portrayed in Season 1.

However, he now has a 'Probie' underneath him. With just him and Kate, Gibbs would still take much out on Tony rather than Kate, even though she was technically a Probie. With McGee under him, it gives him a chance to shine as more of a big brother/bully type than he used to. DiNozzo bullies McGee in the way I think Franks would have on Gibbs. I could see Franks making Gibbs put on a rubber overalls in "Black Water", but I can't see Gibbs doing it to Tony. Gibbs still takes out some anger against Tony, but he has an outlet in the form of McGee. An example of this is in "The Bone Yard", when Gibbs slaps Tony but then slaps McGee for no real reason.

Some important milestones and low-lights happen for Tony that are referenced various times through the rest of the series. He is called Senior Field Agent for the first time in "Red Cell". He almost dies from plague in "SWAK", which by the way was a very good performance in one of Tony's big performances. The other was "Chained", though I wasn't a big fan of this episode, it however can be seen in this episode that Gibbs trusts Tony not to muck up undercover work.

150 EPISODES AND STILL GOING STRONG

28th March 2010

Today I'm going to compare NCIS with some similar shows that have also reached the 150 episode barrier. This may be slightly be already said before but I can't help it but mention it. NCIS is currently in its seventh season and has produced 156 episodes, excluding the two pilot episodes which were apart of JAG.

The main one I am going to compare is 'CSI' and its spin offs. CSI is an extremely popular program and many consider it the pinnacle, the forefront and the inspiration of today's crime dramas. Beginning in 2000, it quickly rose to the Number 1 show for two consecutive seasons (2002-2004) and every one of its first nine completed seasons has been in the Top Ten. However, it peaked in its fifth season and since then has dropped off dramatically into its current tenth Season. The drop off has been from 26 million to 15 million. The 150th episode was in the seventh season which was still in the 20 million stage. But at the time of the 150th episode, it had been dropping already for 2 seasons. CSI: Miami is extremely similar, just not at the same scale of CSI. CSI: NY hasn't reached its 150th episode yet, but will in the next year, is doing slightly better, managing to hold onto its average 13 million viewers for all 6 seasons.

But there is rarely a show that rises with each season. Save the 4th season, NCIS has beaten its previous season to now become (in the first half of the season) the Number One show, and except for American Idol, Number two. It now averages around 20 million in its seventh season, something unheard of in American scripted shows. It is all but certain that there will be an 8th and even 9th season of NCIS and it will be curious to see how these seasons go in comparison to previous ones in terms of ratings.

ABBY IN SEASON SEVEN

30th March 2010

While Season 7 hasn't quite finished yet, and I believe there is a spoiler that Abby is keeping an important secret from the team, but I'll write this anyway. I may update it. This was written with six episodes left in the season.

Compared with Season 6, Abby has excelled herself in this season. Whether the writers took in some of the complaints of season 6 or not, Abby is back to her normal self. Her whinging is toned down a lot.

So far, Abby has had no central episodes, in fact, there are episodes in which Abby has minimal airtime. I think this is a first for a season. In Season One, it frequently happened where Ducky only got a few minutes on screen, whereas this time, Abby has that. I'm not saying that is a good thing, or a bad thing. It is just nice to see proof that the writers don't need to overuse her in every episode. "Truth or Consequences" and "Jet Lag" are a few examples of this.

Some of Abby's good episodes include "Outlaws and In-laws" where she has the mystery of Gibbs' boat, "Power Down" and her struggle as a 21st century tech and "Flesh and Blood" when she meets Tony's father. Other memorable moments are in "Reunion" when she talks with Ziva, "Faith" when she has her best friend and her wish to see her son (even if it was a little unrealistic) and "Masquerade" and her protective suit.
