I SUPPOSE I OUGHT........

12th April

I suppose I ought to write a blog entry today, not really too inspired as real life, as in work is urgent at the moment, however, I'm feeling fairly magnanimous today so I will.

In fact, I think I'll have another look at one of my favourite or recurrent themes, i.e. episode titles and what they conjure up. First and foremost, the scriptwriters deserve endless credit for their enormous ingenuity with these titles; since not only do they summarise the episode itself but also lead to all sorts of other conjectures by people like myself who come with all other kinds of meanings.

However, what really has me curious about these titles is whether or not they're coined prior to writing the script or after, as in which came first, the chicken or the egg? My logic dictates title first and then storyline, however, there is also the possibility the scriptwriters work in the same way as the Bertsolaris when they create their Bertsos, i.e. starting with the last line and working back up, whilst threading in links from the previous Bertso (if there is one), or episode in the case of the scriptwriters. Or maybe they start out with the body of the text before coming up with the beginning and the end. Is there a consensus on episode titling or is it up to the individual scriptwriter or the scriptwriting team?

Anyhow getting back to the episode titles themselves, let's take a look at last week's 'Guilty Pleasure' and the forthcoming one 'Moonlighting'. Now why should pleasure make you feel guilty? Because it's illicit, sinful or both? Even so, if something's pleasurable why should you feel guilty about it? Illogical, isn't it? Well, yes and no, since the church, particular the Roman Catholic church dictates or in the past has dictated that certain pleasures are sinful, therefore, if you succumb to them you should feel guilty, go to confession and do penance. Interesting how these age old notions continue today, and that to a certain extent let ourselves be governed by them. Given the premise of the episode the title fits like a glove even though it has nowt to do with religion.

The forthcoming episode, is all the more interesting since it has yet to be aired and we have only the CBS synopsis for it. Moonlighting, as we all know, traditionally means doing another job in addition to our main job to make more money, usually at unearthly hours, and frequently this other job isn't always above board. So, what awaits us with this new episode? Will the title encompass the episode or not? I raise the question, since there are times, when on viewing an episode, you get the impression that perhaps a different title might have been more appropriate given the sequence of events, although on paper the original title may have been more than apt.

This is just something, which I'm want to mull over in my head, since for some unknown reason I find episode titles, film titles and book titles, not to mention song titles of innate interest. Why does a writer give a certain title to his or her work? And why do my fellow translators, those who translate books, films, etc., persist in giving totally different titles, whereby the original work is initially unrecognisable.?

And with these comments for perusal I leave you.

A LOOK AT THE RATINGS

8th April

The ratings are out for this week's episode Guilty Pleasures, and at 16.00 Mill. viewers it's the lowest so far this season. Nevertheless, NCIS not only remains firmly in second place but has ironically closed the gap with American Idol quite considerably, since AI also got their lowest ratings at 17.9 Mill. viewers. The ratings drop for AI is quite dramatic in comparison to NCIS.

Taking a look back over the ratings, except for the episodes up to the Christmas break all the others have come in fits and starts, coupled with reappearance of AI in the audience rating stakes. Given this lack of continuity, it's really quite formidable for NCIS to have held on so solidly to their ranking in the viewing stakes on Tuesday. Fortunate perhaps that the series is consolidated otherwise it might be in its death throes, god forbid! We also have now another break in the episode sequence for a couple of weeks (if I remember rightly), why? I don't know but it's fortunate the main story arcs are contained within an individual episode otherwise trying to remember and follow would be hell for the audience. Makes you wonder whether programmers really prefer these mini-series that are spewed out in a few weeks then heard of no more. I used to think Spanish programmers were bad, since here they chop and change programmes/series at the drop of a hat depending on the latest soccer match (or basketball in the case of LaSexta - channel broadcasting NCIS in the Spanish State) or any other event the programmer in question deems of greater interest than the programmed series or programme, although they're invariably in cahoots with the programmers of other channels, since what one does the other follows; and consequently a great many series end up on the rubbish tip before they've started.
In view of the hiccups on CBS and other channels since the start of the year, it would be appear US programmers are following their European colleagues in the same way, i.e. playing silly b*****s with the different programmes or series to fit in the latest sporting event or other event deemed more interesting than that programmed.

Anyhow, I suppose we shouldn't grumble since we're guaranteed NCIS for at least another season (hopefully more).

Y con esto y un bizcocho se acabó lo que se dió.

ABBY AS GIRLFRIEND MATERIAL

5th April 2010

Having looked at most of the men as possible partner material, I thought I'd take a look at one of the women.

Would Abby Scuito make a good girlfriend? She is beautiful, affectionate and loyal. Many men would be proud to have a woman like Abby on their arm. However, her goth lifestyle would turn a number of men off. Particularly the more conservative kind. But would Abby be attracted to a conservative man in the first place?

Abby is also a strong woman of decided opinions. It has been my experience that this tends to intimidate more men than it attracts. Often too, it attracts men that we really don't want. The sort who are still looking for a replacement for mommy! So it is going to take a man who is not threatened by a strong woman to be a good partner for Abby.

Of course any man who takes up with Abby is going to need to be able to cope with the fact that she is close to Gibbs. The closeness of the relationship is such that any potential boyfriend is going to need to be able to understand that this is a substitute father relationship. I think this would be a major hurdle for many men. However, any man who is secure enough in himself not to be threatened by a strong woman, is not going to feel threatened by her friendship with Gibbs.

Abby does have a tendency to be clingy, which would act against her in a relationship. No-one likes to feel stifled.

However, on balance, I think that Abby would certainly make an excellent girlfriend, if you were a particularly outstanding man.

PITO, PITO, GOGORRITO....
