Character and Episode Discussion Threads

14th April 2012

By now, most of you will have realized there are several discussion threads, which have been locked, albeit a temporary measure a priori. No doubt many of you are asking why. Well, if you read this blog you'll find out.

This last week there has been a flurry of postings on several threads, which on the one hand is fantastic, as it's been a long time since this last time. On the other hand; however, this flurry is also being accompanied by aggression in the posts. Discussion is about debating a topic pacifically and not getting all hot-headed about it to the point of criticizing posts, which disagree with your way of thinking. Admittedly nobody's been directly insulted, but opinions on both sides of the coin have been pooh-poohed to say the least implying the poster doesn't know what he/she is talking about. And frankly that is not on, this is a people friendly site, i.e. we want people to play nice, you think that's insipid or a trifle twee in this day and age, well tough! There are other forums where you can discuss/argue to the point of insulting other posters, mock their ideas; and if that's what you want, then you know where door is.

Another matter that has come to light, is that for some unknown reason, there's seems to be a deliberate attempt to convert the episode discussion threads into one about a specific character as opposed to discussing the episode and other characters therein.

Another point, the threads which are about why we dislike a character are there for people to moan and complain about the same; whereas those about why we like a character are for people to praise and speak marvels about said character. They are not for people with opposing views to enter and shove the good/bad qualities down the throats of those posters who think differently.

If you want threads, which are primarily positive about certain characters, then we have sites for the main cast members, where obviously members of the same are pro the character they play in the series. Take note:

There is another question I should like to point out, and I believe it's not the first time I've done so, not all members on this site are native English speakers, in fact there are many foreigners on here. Why do I point this out? Well, for the simple reason not everyone may be getting the same impression when you write, i.e. what might sound inoffensive to a native English speaker may sound the contrary to a foreigner and vice versa. Now that doesn't mean you have to use simplistic language, but simply to stand back and think when you read or write a post.

In light of all the above, the threads I've locked down today will remain so until next Tuesday evening so everyone can take a deep breath and calm down, not to mention reflect on why this has happened. This is an extremely sad situation I know; however, I think it's a far better option than deleting or banning people. And let nobody get the wrong idea and think I'm soft, because if I have to delete or ban I will do so with no qualms whatsoever.

Just remember, I and my fellow mods are here the same as you to enjoy talking about the series, the cast, the characters, etc.; and the last thing we want to do is to spoil that enjoyment, but if there are those out there who are intent on spoiling the enjoyment of the majority then measures will be taken, come hell or highwater.

Writing this blog has been extremely unpleasant, unfortunately PMs do not allow for much space. I sincerely hope this situation won't be repeated; however, that is up to you.

As you can see from the title I did not write this blog; however, I thought it was a good one and decided to share with the rest of you. Hope you enjoy, and please do comment if you so wish in the thread below.

NCIS MODERATORS' BLOG S9 - NCIS

Season Nine: "Safe Harbor"

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 12:00pm The United States Coast Guard was founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1790 – predating the Navy by almost four years. They’ve fought and died in every major American conflict and continue to act as the gold standard in areas of maritime
safety, security and stewardship. And – oh, yeah...

They were also an integral part of this episode of NCIS.

A very special thanks to the men and women of the Coast Guard for allowing us to their cutters, launches, zodiacs, and helicopters. It’s always fun to explore this largely unsung branch of the armed forces through the eyes of CGIS Special Agent
Abigail Borin - a role wonderfully reprised by Diane Neal. We’d like to think of Diane (and Borin) as a member of our NCIS extended family.

Family was actually a recurring theme for us in this episode. From the dynamic of an Arab family torn apart by lies and hate – to the close-knit “family dynamic” of our own NCIS team. We felt the story of a strong but misguided mother would
particularly resonate with Ziva - especially when dealing with a father figure who may or may not be what he seems.

Speaking of which...

The sets used in this episode are not always “what they seem”. Thanks to the outstanding work of our masterful crew, it is at times literally impossible to tell which scenes were filmed on our home sound stages and which were filmed on an actual vessel anchored in Long Beach harbor. For instance, during the chase sequence when Tony and Ziva run after Farid (played by David Diaan) the intercutting between sound stage and real ship are blended perfectly.

In addition to physical locations, our talented post-production team added a few digital elements as well. The various Navy vessels, which appear anchored near the family’s cargo ship, were computer generated.

Thank you to our entire guest cast for a wonderful show. Many of our viewers may have recognized the wonderful Shohreh Aghashloo from her performances in “24” and “House of Sand and Fog”. Wesam Keesh and Raffi Barsoumian portrayed her
two sons with great intensity and emotion.

As always, the magnificent chemistry between Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly David McCallum, Pauley Perrette and Sean Murray was evident. They always bring their “A” game. But a special shout out to Cote de Pablo whose connection and empathy with a torn, grieving middle-eastern mother was both tender and tough.

Thanks for watching.

Reed Steiner, Co-Executive Producer

It's not a long blog, but I thought it was interesting to read the opinion of this episode from the inside. Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully comment.

Agur, gero arte

Ongi Etorri Season 9

8th October 2011

Here we are once again, at the beginning of a new NCIS season (Nº9) and 3 episodes into the same.

In the latter half of S8 we saw some interesting changes, Michael Weatherly directed his first NCIS Episode entitled One Last Score written by Jesse Stern. As one might imagine MW stamped his signature on the episode, although a priori it might not be evident to the viewer. Strongly suggest you listen to his commentary (Mark Horowitz also accompanies this commentary, with some interesting insights) on the episode, where he tells us how it went and how it felt to be on both sides of the camera. Worth listening to. We had the wonderful Baltimore episode and at long last learned about the first meeting between Gibbs and DiNozzo, probably one of the most entertaining episodes ever; and certainly one of mine at least. It inspired me for the banner at the top of the page no less. The end of S8 saw the demise of Mike Franks and as such the loss of one of our favourite guest actors Muse Watson, whom we shall no doubt be seeing in other media. Yet another loss is that of Jesse Stern, a fantastic scriptwriter, who had been with the NCIS crew for several seasons, but has decided to test out other waters. I'm sure we'll be seeing his name in the credits of other media in the not too distant future. In this latter half of S8 we also re-encountered the late Kate Todd's sister Dr. Rachel Cranston (wonderfully portrayed by Wendy Makkena), a psychiatrist who came to assess the MCRT including Leon Vance, she turned out to be quite a quirky doctor, who got through to the team members in an unusual manner, i.e. they didn't have to lie down on a couch while she sat down notebook in hand, but rather, she chose to assess them in situ.

After the long summer break, well long for us the spectators, finally came to an end on 20th September with the S9 premiere Nature of the Beast, may favourite premiere episode of all time so far. I found it very well balanced, with wonderful performances by MW, Scott Wolf as the fake FBI, Wendy Makkena as Rachel Cranston again, MH, etc. The interaction between Gibbs and DiNozzo, likewise DiNozzo and Cranston were memorable, very intense, very contained gestures from all 3 yet which spoke volumes. Restless, our 2nd episode of the season, with a contemplative DiNozzo and Gibbs our functional mute who understands Tony inside out. The Penelope Papers aired last week, gave us an insight into McGee and his upbringing. A wonderful performance from Lily Tomlin in this.

I think what most stands out in these first 3 episodes is that we have back at long last, the wonderful duo of Gibbs+DiNozzo, which attracted many of us from the very beginning of the series, as well as a cohesive team, who might bicker, but without drawing blood, whereas in recent past seasons, the various team members seemed to be aiming for each other's jugular, i.e. the sibling identity was lost; thankfully; however, this has been recovered since the latter half of S8 and continues so far this. Next week's episode Enemy on the Hill gives us an insight into Abby, which no doubt will be as entertaining as Cracked in S8 where we had a quirky yet mature Abby.

The blog is now operational again. It may not be daily since that is not always feasible, but we will try to make this have a certain regularity as the inspiration takes us.

Y con esto y un bizcocho, se acabó lo que se dió.

Agur denoi

I really dont want to sound rude, and I know you are gong to block this as soon as I post it, but you continuosly talk about this being a people friendly site and you write things that are very strongly worded. I think that we should not have to be the only ones that have to follow that rule of not critisizing people. Please dont get the wrong isea, but you said this was the only way to reach you. You said you dont like private messages.
