ZIVA-ISMS REVISITED

29th April 2010

One thing I found when I did my earlier blog is that people love Ziva-isms and can't get enough of them. My favorites were all enthusiastically agreed with and a few more added.

He's such a pimp.

You've been whining like a little snitch all week.

I'm bra-less.

That's quaint. We'd be like the homos in the old movies.

You can't make an omelet without breaking some legs.

It's like shooting fish in a pond.

Once in a blue lagoon.

Did you wake up in the wrong bed this morning?

Season 7 gave us the wonderful "We've been sent to sit on the baby". However since my original blog another has come up that I just had to include - "The shooter was actually in the book suppository."

Thanks to everyone for sharing their favorite Ziva-isms.

DUCKY AND ABBY

28th April 2010

I thought today I would take a look at the relationship between Ducky and Abby. At first glance, it is an unlikely friendship. A charming older man and a hyper-active Goth. Appearances are, as the say, deceptive.

Ducky and Abby are probably two of the most intelligent members of NCIS. Both deal with the dead. Ducky at the fore front with the actual corpses; Abby with samples of tissue and bodily fluids. Neither of them like to see a mystery left unsolved. If Abby is hard at work in her lab, Ducky is one of the few people whom she is happy to have disturb her solitude.

When Ducky is distressed about the apparent return of a rapist/murderer in "Lt Jane Doe" it is Abby that Gibbs gently directs to comfort and distract Ducky.

It is the sort of strong, warm friendship that allows for a little flirtation which both know is not seriously meant. In "Heart Break" when Ducky is going on a date, Abby mourns "Why can't I find a man like you?" She gets a cheeky grin and the response "Well, if this doesn't work out, I'm available." Neither mean it, but it is a measure of their closeness that they are comfortable with mild sexual banter.

The true depth of their friendship is shown in "Double Identity". Abby tracks down the reason for the changes in Ducky. When he goes to the cemetery with flowers to put on his mother's grave, Abby is waiting for him. She says very little, except to hold close to her this man who is obviously very important in her life. It is also worth noting that Ducky really isn't surprised that it is Abby who has found out about his mother's death.

This friendship is one of the cornerstones of the NCIS universe. Long may it continue.

DOUBLE IDENTITY

27th April 2010

This episode was good, old fashioned solid NCIS. Good plot, great script, and enough red herrings to start of fish canning factory.

A man is shot in Rock Creek Park. He turns out to be a married USMC Lt who went MIA in Afghanistan 6 years ago. The team work to unravel his past when they discover an added complication. Another name, another life....another wife!

"Double Identity" had several stand out scenes. The interrogations of Leah Mayne and Gordon Holcomb that flowed from one interrogation to the other put me in mind of the similar scenes in "Internal Affairs". Leah Mayne being interrogated by Ziva and Tony blending smoothly into the interrogation of Gordon Holcomb by Gibbs.

Ducky at his mother's grave gently talking to her about the opera. Then the realization that his mother's death isn't a secret any more when Mortimer, the puppy Abby is raising to be a seeing eye dog comes sniffing at his boot. Abby standing there holding Ducky was one of the more poignant moments in NCIS.

The final scene in autopsy would have to be the best. Ducky comes into the darkened autopsy suite to find Gibbs laying on one of the tables waiting for him. The scene between the two of them as Ducky explains why he didn't tell anyone is one of the best Gibbs/Ducky scenes ever, in my opinion.

I would like to add my personal thanks to the nice person in wardrobe who dug out that USMC red hoodie. That has to be my favorite piece of Gibbs' clothing. Nice to see it again.

The script had few memorable lines, surprisingly.

Tony: You subscribing to the DiNozzo Theory? Always suspect the wife.

Tony: You ever been married, doc?
Doctor: Twice. But never at the same time.

Gibbs: Half my team's worried about you.
Ducky: Let me guess which half. Abby and Ziva?

Ducky: My neck wear seems to be source of fascination.

WHY I LIKE DUCKY

26th April 2010

I thought today I would take a look at the reason's I like the character of Dr Donald "Ducky" Mallard.

  • Charming. Ducky has that wonderful old school charm that makes him delightful.
  • The stories. It's hard to resist Ducky's wonderfully rambling reminiscences. He has a story for every occasion, and occasionally he is even allowed to finish them.
  • Respect. Ducky shows great respect for the corpses that pass through his autopsy suite. He never looses sight of the fact that the bodies were once living breathing human beings, and he takes care to treat them with the utmost respect. Going so far as to get very angry when someone is less than respectful. Witness his anger at McGee when he is carrying a victim's head around in a bag as though it was just another piece of evidence.
  • Gentleman. Ducky is a gentleman, purely and simply. He is never less than courteous to women.
  • Loyal. Ducky is deeply loyal to his friends and is capable of being deeply hurt by their actions. Remember his response when he found out about Shannon and Kelly?
  • Prepared to bend the rules when necessary. Ducky is aware that sometimes the rule book doesn't hold all the answers. In "Head Case" he goes with Gibbs to get a body cremated so the ashes can be buried at sea, even though the body is now technically evidence.
These are the reasons I like Ducky. Do you agree with them? Have your own reasons? I would love to hear them.
