MOTHER'S DAY
20th April 2010
I'm afraid I consider this episode to be a contender for the Worst Episode of Season 7. It was trite, pedestrian, and often downright boring. Gena Rowlands and Mark Harmon lacked any sort of on screen chemistry. Even the regulars seemed uneasy with each other. The scenes between Vance and Gibbs were awkward and uncomfortable to watch. Usually scenes between those two characters are episode highlights. The episode was only saved from being a total write-off by one scene and a number of very memorable lines, including my new favorite Ziva-ism.
The scene that saved the show was the scene in the basement. Not Joann confessing how she killed to Gibbs, but the interaction between Margaret Allison Hart and Gibbs. The look Margaret gives him is loaded with compassion. She knows his past. She knows what he has done and why he did it. An awesome, powerful scene.
A niggle: the flashback of Gibbs killing the drug cartel member. The scenery suggests the killing took place in Mexico. If that was the case, why was JAG Lt Macy investigating the murder? The murder of a drug cartel member in Mexico would be Federale business.
As I said, there were a few really memorable lines.
Ziva: My citizenship test is coming up and I wish to pass with swimming colors.
McGee: Flying colors.
Ziva: Any colors will do.
Gibbs: Suck on this.
McGee: (takes candy) It does taste like coffee. Wait. Did he tell me to...?
Tony: Suck it up, McGee.
Ziva: The shooter was really in the book suppository.
Vance: That your decision, Agent DiNozzo?
Tony: Not mine to make, Director.
Vance: You got that right.
Vance: Don't give me that B.S., Gibbs. I know what pushes your buttons.
Gibbs: Play nice kiddies. There is plenty of room in the sandbox.
Gibbs: It smells like a French ***** house in here.
Palmer: That's me.
Gibbs: What are you trying to do, Palmer, raise the dead?
Margaret: Law School 101. Truth is over-rated.

MCGEE AND ABBY
19th April 2010
Today I thought I would take a look at the relationship between McGee and Abby. This pairing, romantically, is popular with a segment of the fans, but undeniably the pairing as just friends is a good one.
McGee is captivated by Abby's voice in "Sub Rosa". Tony tries to dissuade him from pursuing Abby romantically by telling him about her tatts. McGee shows right at the beginning that he is his own man. Far from being put off, he goes and gets a "Mom" tattoo on his butt to impress Abby.
McGee and Abby date a time or two. He sleeps in her bed, not realizing it's a coffin and then freaks out when he finds out. McGee also rushes things. Telling Abby he "likes" her, in a manner that sends Abby screaming for cover. Abby wants fun, not a romantic relationship at this point. Their romance, such as it is, comes to a halt about then. Even though McGee is still carrying a torch for Abby in season 4, with his "Deep Six" character in love with "Amy" whom he based on Abby.
McGee is still prone to jealousy in season 5. He dislikes Fred Rinnert, the uber-geek in the episode "Ex-Files". The caf-pow duel is one of the funniest scenes in that season.
Abby isn't free from jealousy either. She gives Petty Officer Cynthia Cluxton the evil eye when she visits the lab in season 2's "Lt Jane Doe". Her jealousy is still going strong is season 6. Abby loathes the ICE agent Jules in "Semper Fidelis".
Their relationship is strong. McGee is prepared to do anything for Abby, and she knows it. Because she asks it, McGee allows himself to be manipulated into adopting Jethro the dog. Also to arrange for a small boy to see his mother on Christmas Eve via MTAC. McGee may fuss about it, but he does them willingly, because he likes to make Abby happy. One could almost say he allows himself to be manipulated because of the enjoyment it gives Abby.
The relationship between Abby and McGee is probably one of the strongest in NCIS.

18th April 2010
I'm back a week early (due to illness) and have been filling in my time drowning my sorrows in NCIS dvds. Today I am taking a look at the season 2 episode "Lt. Jane Doe".
In this episode Ducky links the rape and murder of a woman to a similar unsolved case that has been haunting him for ten years.
This is a powerfully dramatic episode, with David McCallum showing his caliber. The scene in autopsy with Ducky and Gibbs is probably one of the best Ducky/Gibbs scenes in the history of the show. After Gibbs chews Ducky for holding out on him, he puts his arm around Ducky's shoulders in a gesture of comfort. Ducky puts his arm around Gibbs' waist and they slowly walk to Ducky's desk.
Gibbs shows great sensitivity in this episode. He tells Abby she is going to need help with the forensics. When she says no, Gibbs looks pointedly at Ducky brooding in front of the photos on the plasma screen. The wordless exchange of looks between Gibbs and Abby says more than words possibly can about how much they care for Ducky.
The running of gag of karma repeatedly biting Tony of the butt was very funny. Two cups of hot coffee in the lap and the contents of a greasy skillet.
Gibbs interrogation of Petty Officer Cynthia Cluxton was also a strong, dramatic scene. Interrogation scenes almost seem to be Mark Harmon's forte in NCIS. They are almost all powerful and memorable.
The final scene as Ducky hands over the ashes of the first Jane Doe to be interred is gently moving.
Like all NCIS episodes, "Lt Jane Doe" had some memorable lines.
Kate: With all that bad karma you've got with women I'm surprised something hasn't fallen off.
Gibbs: Missing something, DiNozzo?
Tony: Do you believe in karma, boss?
Gibbs: I've been married three times.
Ducky: Unlike the living, when the dead speak, they don't lie.
Ducky: You're back, aren't you? You bastard!
Abby: McGee is rewiring my hotbox
(Gibbs head slaps Tony)
Tony: What was that for?
Gibbs: Not growing up.
Tony: Nothing says 'Welcome to Manhood' like a skillful lap dancer.
Abby: You touch that, McGee, you'll be singing soprano.

Agur bihar arte
