¡A ver! ¿Acaso nosotr@s somos iguales que hace unos 7 u 8 años? ¡Claro qué no!

THE HEAD SLAPS

3rd February 2010

Chatting with a friend about NCIS yesterday and the subject of the head slaps came up. We all know how they started. Back in season 1, Michael Weatherly was running off at the mouth and copped a whallop from Mark Harmon. The rest, as they say, is history.

But why the fascination that we all have with them? I am no exception. A head slap in NCIS cheers me up no end. When there are no head slaps it feels like something is missing.

Many of the head slaps are scripted in and many are not. It can be fun trying to work out which ones aren't scripted. Almost impossible, but still fun to try.

Season 6 had very few head slaps. At Michael Weatherly's request, I understand. It was an attempt to cut down on the number of fans wanting to slap him. He has complete strangers coming up to him wanting to slap his head. Or his butt. Both the height of rudeness in my book. How would you like someone you have never seen before coming up to you and asking if they could slap your head? Or not asking and just slapping your butt? It is a tribute to Michael's professionalism that he takes all this with good humor. I can think of only one complete stranger who could get away with smacking the back of my head or my butt. Anyone else would end up with their arm broken in three places.

Back to the actual head slaps. After much reflection I have come to the conclusion it is the slap-stick (no pun intended) element of the head slap that appeals. Like the Three Stooges fingers to the eyes trick. It is a very basic form of comedy, but one that appeals across any language barriers. I remember reading a number of years ago about research done on humor by an American university. At this remove, I don't remember which university. They took several comedy movies into countries where English wasn't there first language, and translations weren't available. Many of the comedies were incomprehensible to the audiences, but without exception, The Three Stooges provoked gales of laughter. Clever lines can loose a lot in translation, but a finger to the eye, like a head slap....that's always funny.

DECEPTION

2nd February 2010

I hadn't watched this season 3 episode by Jack Bernstein for quite some time. I had forgotten just how good it is. A Navy Lt Cmdr has been abducted. She happens to be involved in the highly classified movement of nuclear fuel rods. The team needs to find her and soon.

The episode has some wonderful scenes. Starting with everyone coming into the office on a Sunday in very different modes of dress. Gibbs in a suit and tie I think has provoked the most conversation amongst fans over the years. Not to mention the brief appearance of Ducky in his golfing clothes!

The scene where Ziva and Tony are driving around the mall car park looking for the Lt Cmdr's car, while Tony voices his theory on male and female cars. Would have been an impressive theory if he hadn't been white faced and close to screaming. Very funny scene.

Equally funny is the scene with the security guard at the Lt Cmdr's home. Ziva is not very happy at being called a dirtbag, but she gets even angrier when he calls her ma'am. Tony's fascination with handcuffs also begins to appear in this scene.

One of the best scenes, however, is Tony "interrogating" the two terrified teenagers, one of them who was played by Zac Efron. They are not talking, so he starts bluffing. His request to requisition genital cuffs and a taser has the two boys totally terrified. Couldn't help thinking that Gibbs would not have approved.

The other is Gibbs taking a taste of Abby's Caf-Pow. The expression on his face and his hurried spitting of the concoction back into the container said it all.

The final scene where Gibbs is supervising the arrest of a child molester via MTAC is excellent. As the guy is arrested, Gibbs just looks at the MTAC screen and smiles.

As in all good NCIS episodes, it is the great lines that help make the episode so memorable.

Tony: That's a nice suit. Did you get married again?

Gibbs: Are you waiting for an invitation, Officer David?
Ziva: Oh, so you are getting married.

Abby: Thank you sir.
Gibbs: Don't call me sir.
Abby: Thank you ma'am.

Tony: No little red light on the radio means radio not working.

Tony: Her house looked like Martha Stewart's jail cell, but neater.

Ziva: Don't listen to him McGee. I think your attire is quite sexy.

Ziva: Does a bear sit in the woods?

Gibbs: How many times do I have to tell you he's not a toy?

Tony: Look's like this guy left in a hurry.
Gibbs: Ya think, DiNozzo?

Gibbs: Let me know if I'm hurting you.
Logan: I'm hurting. I'm hurting.
Gibbs: Good.

FAVORITE ZIVA-ISMS

1st February 2010

Like her or not, the character of Ziva has an endearing way with idiomatic American English. Her use is quirky and unpredictable and always humorous and charming. The writers had a brilliant idea when they came up with Ziva-isms. They made an otherwise hard edged character more human, and much more easily acceptable to the audience.

I have favorites, that always make me giggle when I watch the episode they are in, or even just think of the line. These are the ones that make me lose it.

Lions and spiders and bears! Oh My!

Does a bear sit in the woods? (Well yes, he probably does....along with other things.)

Butch Cassidy and the Sunrise Kid. (Makes more sense than Sundance, I guess.)

Tony is jerking your brain. (Ouch!)

American idioms drive me up the hall.

We have been sent to sit on the baby. (This one is my all time favorite.)

What are your favorite Ziva-isms?
