BRINGING HETTY TO WASHINGTON

9th December 2009

We've had a couple of crossovers to NCIS: Los Angeles in Vance and Abby. I would like to see some traffic coming the other way. To whit, I want Hetty Lange to visit the original series. I love the character of Hetty. I can see the character causing ructions at head office. We know how she gets on with Vance, and now with Abby. But what about the others?

McGee - Personally I think Hetty would terrify him. He would be a small puddle of goo in his chair. Whimpering every time she even looked in his direction.

Tony - Ms Lange would not take too well to Tony's behavior. After tearing strips off him, I think Tony would go into hiding somewhere until she returned to Los Angeles.

Ducky - I can see Hetty and Ducky being old close friends, possibly even former lovers. A genuine warmth between the two of them, compounded by their joint love of elaborate stories.

Palmer - He would take one look at Hetty and hide. Probably in the same place as Tony.

Ziva - I imagine Ziva and Hetty getting on very well together. Ziva and Kensi are much alike, and we know Hetty and Kensi get on well. A sisterhood of strong women.

Gibbs - Now this one would be interesting. I can imagine Hetty knowing Gibbs from his probie days. Maybe even having been a mother-figure for him. Can you imagine the looks on the teams faces if Hetty began scolding Gibbs in the squad room?

Mike Franks - I would love to see Mike and Hetty in the same episode. Mike's laid back ways would infuriate Hetty, and she would be unable to resist taking him to task...and if we had Gibbs caught in the middle. Oh what a wonderfully comic scene that would be.

XMAS EPISODES

8th December

Next week sees the airing of this Xmas episode for S7 on Tuesday 15th, and I wonder how it will turn out. I know last year's wasn't much cop, and this year's a priori looks good with the re-appearance of Ralph Waite (who by the way, was quite dashing as a young man in the Paul Newman film Cool Hand Luke - going back a few decades of course), as Gibbs' father. Nevertheless, the Xmas episodes of TV series have a tendency to be overdone, excessively puerile, since rightly or wrongly they tend to be imbued in an irrealism of human warmth and bonhomie, which in reality rarely exists, even where there are children. Even when a Xmas episode is essentially gruesome, it always finishes happily ever after often with lots of loose ends, or antinatural tying off thereof. So why do TV series year after year insist on producing 'tinselly, sugary sweet' Xmas episodes, not only that when shown in other countries, as they rarely coincide datewise, you end of getting Xmas episodes at Easter or mid-summer, making their banality even more evident than when shown at Xmas time, where this tends to be admitted per se. Furthermore, this is not exclusive to US series, the same happens with Spanish, French, Italian, German, etc., not only that but they also make the same mistakes.

I have nothing against special Xmas episodes, I just wish they weren't quite so gooey, just a little bit more realistic without the gushiness in the happily ever after. A happy ending is welcome but without the gush please.

Hopefully, this season's Xmas episode will be on the right side of poignant without the overkill.

Y con esto y un bizcocho, se acabó lo que se dió.

ONE SHOT, ONE KILL

8th December 2009

We have no new NCIS here in Australia until the end of January/beginning of February, so I decided to do some blogs on earlier episodes. If nothing else it gives me an excuse to get my dvds out and enjoy myself.

"One Shot, One Kill" written by Gil Grant was one of my favorite episodes of season 1. To refresh your memories, NCIS is looking for a sniper whose targets are USMC Recruiters...and Gibbs and Kate go undercover to catch him. With Gibbs as the sacrificial goat.

This episode was the perfect balance of drama and humor that has come to typify NCIS. I think my favorite scene would have to be the team putting one over the FBI. Stringing them along until Kate finds the bullet. This time they don't want the body (a reference is made to "Yankee White" and NCIS' body-napping tendencies)...they just want the bullet that killed him. Tony creates a fake bullet hole, whilst Kate digs out the real bullet. As a parting shot Gibbs sweetly tells the FBI agent in change to "Say hello to Fornell for me." I do wish they had shot a scene showing the FBI's reaction when they realize they had been done over by NCIS yet again.

This episode introduced Rule 9 to us. Never go anywhere without a knife. This is referred to several times in the episode.

One thing that always amuses me is one small continuity screw up. Gibbs and Tony go to the derelict building the sniper fired from. They need torches as there is no electricity....but the elevator works! Oopsie!

"One Shot, One Kill" gave us some wonderful lines to remember it by.

Tony: I need you on your knees over here Kate. It's time to get dirty.

Carl: That's not how they do it in CSI.

Gibbs: Why are all these dolls naked?
Tony: Don't look at me boss. Must be a Goth thing.

Tony: It's a nice neighborhood. A couple of coats of paint...a bulldozer.

Gibbs: Hey DiNozzo, kind of reminds me of your apartment. Except for the minty fresh urine smell.

Kate: Are you sure you know where you're going?
Gibbs: I used to do this for a living.
Tony: They had maps back then?

Tony: Gibbs gets dress blue charlies and I look like one of the Village People.

NCIS ABUSED

7th December

Until now, you've all be used to me sounding off against the treatment of NCIS by the Spanish TV channel LaSexta, well today I'm going to complain about the UK TV channel FIVE and the UK daily The Daily Mirror.

I've just returned from spending a week in the UK for personal reasons, and while there had the opportunity to watch TV. Anyhow, the Daily Mirror (UK national daily with the 2nd largest circulation after The Sun), which announced a repeat of NCIS on Friday but without giving a title or stating the season, and with a very brief synopsis. It turned out to be Switched from S3, however, the synopsis was so brief and sketchy, that one might have been forgiven for confusing it with another episode. Then, lo and behold, the Saturday issue of the Daily Mirror, which announced another episode of NCIS, however, apart from yet another brief sketchy synopsis there was no indication about the episode being a repeat, as it turned out to be; and prior to the episode Switched if I remember rightly. Needless to CSI got all kinds of publicity, but did NCIS get any? NO!!! As per usual. In fact, even LaSexta in the Spanish State gives the repeat episodes publicity, insofar as the episode to be shown on any particular day albeit a repeat.

I had heard UK fans complaining about the abuse of the series, but I hadn't realised it was that bad, and of course not everyone has access to cable TV - I believe NCIS is also shown on FX in the UK.

It was curious to note that CSI gets the same enormous splurge of advertising and marketing in the UK as it does in the Spanish State, which given the fact NCIS is now the Nº1 series in the US doesn't make any sense, whatsoever. So come on UK and Estado Español, pull your socks up and start promoting NCIS as it should be.

Y con esto y un bizcocho, se acabó lo que se dió.
