FAVORITE NCIS WRITERS
14th November 2009
One of the things that makes NCIS so special for me is the quality of the scripts, which is of course, due to the talent of the writers.
I have favorite writers. Ones whom when I see their name on the credits as writer, add that little extra tingle of anticipation.
Jesse Stern is at the top of that list. I first became aware of Jesse after "Identity Crisis". I noted the name (as I always do), then got stunned by the episode. There aren't too many murders where the weapon is mercury injected into the brain. I started to pay very close attention to his scripts after that. It didn't take me long to realize that Jesse is mostly called upon to give us major plot and/or character development. Think "Internal Affairs", "Heartland", "Cloak", "Broken Bird" and "Truth or Consequences" to name a few.
Steven Binder is another favorite. Whether writing solo or in tandem with David North. Steven's name of the credits tells me that the plot is going to be convoluted and distinctly strange. Witness "Murder 2.0" and "Good Cop, Bad Cop".
Alfonso Moreno is also in the list. His scripts so far have all been memorable for a variety of reasons. "Dog Tags", "Collateral Damage" and the wonderful "Caged". We haven't seen anything of Alfonso in season 7 yet, but I have my fingers crossed.
Another writing combination - George Schenck and Frank Cardea has given us some wonderful scripts over the course of the show. Far too many to list, but my personal favorite "South by Southwest" is one of them.
Who are your favorite writers and why?

GIBBS AS FUTURE DIRECTOR - A SECOND LOOK
12th November 2009
Thanks to all the great response I got to my original blog, I felt it worthwhile taking another look at the subject.
Firstly, I was surprised, given how people are attached to the current structure of the show, that the majority of respondents liked and agreed with the supposition.
I talked about Gibbs' qualities and how he would make a good director. Sandbar17 pointed out one that I missed. "One other quality that you didn't mention was his ability to train his people. I was struck by it again when I recently watched 'Singled out' and watched how Gibbs helped McGee think through the crime scene and what happened to the victim. Until recently, I didn't think that Gibbs would give that up. But watching Vance developing a mentoring relationship with McGee made me realize that it still could be done from the big chair."
Most people see Gibbs as director as a logical progression for the character. Although most would prefer it if it didn't happen for a few years yet. By reason of the position the part of Director doesn't have as much screen time, and we all want to see Mark Harmon front and center as Gibbs for many years to come.
Again, my thanks to everyone who responded.

SUBMITTED BY MargyWTONY AND JIMMY - AS CLOSE AS GIBBS & DUCKY?
11th November 2009
Somewhere we are missing pieces. In the season 6 episode "Bounce" it was obvious that Tony DiNozzo and Jimmy Palmer had become friends. Close enough that Tony was discussing his case-related problems with Jimmy. So when did this friendship begin, how close is it, and will it ever be as close as the similar friendship of Gibbs and Ducky?
We have no real indicators of when Tony and Jimmy began to be friends. It was Tony who hung the nickname Autopsy Gremlin on Jimmy. But giving a nickname isn't necessarily a sign of affection. This friendship has not been played out in the scripts, so we must make some educated guesses. My guess is that it began at the beginning of season 4 when Tony was leading the team. Perhaps he didn't feel comfortable discussing the cases with Ducky, so he turned to the younger man who was Ducky's second in command, as he himself had been Gibbs'. With the return of Gibbs, and Tony moving back into his second in command position, there was no need to play the friendship out on screen.
It is obvious that the friendship is fairly close. It is Jimmy that Tony turns to as a sounding board in "Bounce". Jimmy also knows Tony well enough to turn up with coffee exactly the way Tony likes it. Jimmy makes some sound suggestions and comments, which coming from almost anyone else, Tony would have reacted negatively too. So close friendship.
Will it ever be as close as that of Gibbs and Ducky? Very possibly. Gibbs and Ducky are two totally different individuals with a deep respect and love for each other. That is obvious in their interactions. The meeting in the evidence garage between Tony and Jimmy in "Bounce" showed that they are certainly on their way to that level of friendship.
What are your thoughts on the subject?
