WHY I LIKE LEROY JETHRO GIBBS

28th October 2009

It's no secret to anyone on here that Leroy Jethro Gibbs is my favorite NCIS character. So I thought that today I would look at the reasons why I like him.

  • Intelligent. Gibbs is sharp and intelligent. He quickly grasps what is going on and why. A codicil to that is Gibbs' ability to think on his feet.
  • Intuitive. Prefers to call it a "gut feeling", but this is just semantics. His ability to feel a situation and read a person can be the difference between life and death. This is the little extra that elevates Gibbs from a good NCIS agent to a great one.
  • Brave. A man of great personal courage when you consider what he has gone through in his life. It also takes great courage to join the military, knowing that your job can quite literally get you killed.
  • Loyal. To his country, to NCIS and to his team. I think loyalty counts more with Gibbs than any other personal trait. If Gibbs is your friend, then he is your friend for life. But woe betide you if you betray his trust.
  • A Good Man. Children and animals instinctively respond to his gentle warmth. You can't fool either, so the fact they both respond quickly and positively to him shows what a good man he really is. Despite the prickly shell he has erected around himself.
  • Witty. The master of a quick retort, Leroy Jethro Gibbs is rarely lost for words. His sense of humor is endearing and, on occasion, a little acidic.
  • Attractive. He is a very good looking, sexually attractive man.
Do you agree with my reasons? Have other reasons of your own? I would love to hear your thoughts.

NCIS LEADS EVEN WITH REPEATS!!!

28th October

Last night's episode 6.15 Deliverance was Nº 1 in the ratings with 16.1 million viewers!!! That was almost a one million vantage point of Dancing with Stars, which as it's not a series was not a repeat. NCIS: Los Angeles was Nº 2 in their time slot behind Dancing with Stars, their ratings dropped considerably but considering they're still the rookies out there, they did well with just over 11 million viewers. Check it out here on EW.Com. You know in Spanish we'd describe NCIS as 'EL P*** AMO' of TV series right now and that it is 'LA CAÑA' - a very rough and ready translation of the previous expressions, and using a bit of poetic licence, since bad language isn't allowed here and I have to set an example, so, erm.. where was I? Oh yes! The rough very rough translation would be NCIS is the Mother of All Series - still a pretty accurate version of what I said in Spanish.

So, where do things go from here? Celebrating episode 200 wouldn't be bad for starters, what? Or, maybe we should start off by practising our own versions of the Gibbs' glare to cow any rivals, any of us might have in our own professions - Hahaha!!!

Y con esto y un bizcocho se acabó lo que se dió.

7.05 CODE OF CONDUCT

27th October 2009

With a story by Christopher Waild and teleplay by Reed Steiner "Code of Conduct" was good NCIS, but not great NCIS.

I very much got the feeling that the crime was secondary to hammering home the fact that the team is back together again. Which is fine. After the massive dramas and upheavals of the first four episodes of the season, we needed a change of pace. However, I felt the pace slowed down too much too quickly. Nor was "Code of Conduct" a particularly memorable episode. There were no stand out scenes that immediately leap to mind when you think about the episode. The closest would have to be the mobile campfire". Tony going into the head, but Gibbs coming out of it with Tony trailing behind him and taking over. Perhaps we can even include Ziva's arrest of Barnes, slamming him face first into his food.

I do have one huge grumble. Jimmy Palmer. After the character's growth over seasons 5 and 6, was it necessary to take Palmer back to being the gauche, irritating little twerp he was when he first joined NCIS? His comments were tasteless and annoying. It wasn't funny. In fact it was cringe invoking. Waild and Steiner slipped up badly with Jimmy in this episode. All kudos to Brian Dietzen for doing the best he could with not very good material.

Palmer did provide about the only highlight of the show, when he got his first ever headslap from Gibbs. From the expression on his face he didn't know whether to be proud or worried.

What did redeem the show was some great lines:

Ducky: He's curiously cold. Frigid in fact.

Ziva: NCIS. We don't want candy.

Tony: Open up, or we'll send the kids in.

Abby: Welcome to the random factory, Gibbs.

FAVORITE VILLAINS

26th October 2009

I felt it was time to take a look at my favorite villains, as debate rages again as to whether or not Corporal Damon Werth should be considered an NCIS villain or not. I don't have many favorite villains. I have a natural preference to heroes. However, occasionally an unforgettable villain comes along.

Rene Benoit aka La Grenouille aka The Frog. Suave and sophisticated, Rene Benoit is probably one of the best villains NCIS has created. Even though I did not like the Frog story arc, I did like the Frog himself. Affable and charming, A rogue, but a thoroughly likable one.

Saleem Ulman. Captor and torturer of both Ziva David and Tony DiNozzo. Articulate and intelligent. So much so that I wondered why he was a terrorist. Most islamic radicals are disaffected young men of fairly low levels of intelligence. This was a man who could have made a real difference to the world....and not by blowing things up and killing people.

Those are about it for me really. None of the other villains have really made an impact on me to the point I could say they are favorites. There are others I didn't like at all, but that is the subject for another blog.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
