WHY I LIKE ABBY

22nd September 2009

The second in my occasional series of blogs on why I like/dislike certain characters. Today I turn my attention to Abby.

  • Loyal to NCIS. She is 100% loyal to NCIS. Even turning down a huge amount of money to go to a commercial laboratory.
  • Loyal to her "Team". Tony, McGee and Ziva. Abby's 'Three Musketeers' as she refers to them in "Last Man Standing". All three of them are very important to her. This is also very apparent in "Caged" when she is stressing about McGee being held hostage. Demanding to know why the team don't get safer jobs so she doesn't have to worry about them. It is left to Ziva to gently point out that if they did, then she wouldn't see them at all.
  • Loyal to Gibbs. No-one is more important in her world view than Leroy Jethro Gibbs. She hates being put in a position of having to lie to him. It is the love of a girl for her father. It something goes wrong, 'Daddy" Gibbs will make it right. Usually with a kiss on the cheek and a caf-pow.
  • Sense of Humor. Abby is quick witted and swift with the pointed comeback. Her humor can often be sarcastic.
  • Eccentric. Probably one of the few genuinely eccentric characters on television. The rest (House, Monk, Dexter etc) come across as having mental problems ranging from mild obsession to complete mental derangement. Abby is a pure eccentric. She doesn't just march to the beat of a different drum; it's an entirely different brass band.
  • Abby is her own person. Her attitudes state clearly "This is me. If you don't like it. Tough!"
What do you think of Abby?

ANECDOTE OF THE DAY

22nd September

I think today we have the scoop on the anecdote of Season 7 premiere. Earlier on today, around 11 a.m. CET (approx. 3 or 5 a.m. depending on whether you are west or east coast US), I put up a new poll to coincide with today's Season 7 premiere of NCIS. Appropriately enough the poll asks you what you thought of the premiere - the past simple verb tense is correct, since the idea of the poll is for people to vote AFTER seeing the premiere.

However, it would seem people are feeling very jittery with the anticipation of tonight's episode, because on logging into the site again around 3pm CET (minus 6 or 8 hours depending on your US location), I discovered people HAD ALREADY VOTED!!!! I suppose, I could have cancelled the poll, made a rehash and then posted again later, but as I have a lot of work on, I decided to leave it as it was. Plus the fact, this 'jumping the gun' gave me something to write about today, particularly as I shan't be watching the episode because although I know it can be downloaded from the internet, I wouldn't be able to view it until 2 a.m. CET (I live in Europe), and really I don't think I'd appreciate it as much as I would viewing it at a 'normal' time.

Of course, I'm as curious as the rest of you to know what's going to happen in tonight's episode, fortunately, I have a better control of my nerves otherwise I'd have to move out to the US to keep up to date with the series in the same timeline as US and Canadian residents.

I do hope people will vote on the poll AFTER the episode please!!! Here's the link: http://cbsncis.wetpaint.com/page/Weekly+Poll I see even more people have voted since I last looked at 3.30 pm CET, because the percentages have changed!!!!

Can somebody please inform Shane Brennan that NCIS fans are so nervous that they are posting on a POST-premiere poll PRIOR to airing!!!! This is quite incredible, anyone would think Gibbs was going to be killed off - DON'T PANIC people - I'm just HYPOTHESISING.

There are an awful lot of words in upper case in today's blog, but given how jittery you all are, I think it's the only way to drive things home today, and even then I'm not all too sure as to whether any of you reading this, are really paying any attention to what you are reading.

So just a few words of advice for those of you who will shortly be viewing the premiere, try practising this breathing exercise, it really does help calm the nerves (I have done it - so I speak by experience). OK, now follow me everyone this is the breathing exercise you're all going to practise to calm down and be in tiptop condition for when the premiere airs:

BREATHING EXERCISE
1) Exhale completely through the mouth
2) Hold without breathing 10 seconds
3) Inhale slowly through 1 nostril (count of 5 for inexperienced/ 10 for experienced)
4) Hold your breath for 10 seconds
5) Exhale slowly through the other nostril (count of 5 for inexperienced/ 10 for experienced)
6) Then repeat, alternating left / right nostril for inhaling /exhaling
7) Do this for 10 minutes, and if done properly you will be be feeling more relaxed

Now, you should all be in the right frame of mind for watching the Season 7 premiere without being a bag of nerves, just simply enjoying every minute - you lucky blighters.

Just one more thing, don't forget to tell me everything that happens in tonight's episode with all the minor details, or I'll make you wait to watch the following episodes and suffer just like us Europeans - not I'm envious or anything :-)

SCRIPTS OF LINDA BURSTYN

21st September 2009

If you are like me and read the credits you will mostly be familiar with Linda as the script editor for the show. However, Linda has been involved in the writing of two episodes for the show so far. Let's take a look at them both.

  • In The Zone. This first script of Linda's took Tony and Nikki Jardine to Baghdad. Whilst not one of my personal favorites, the episode had a strong story line and supplied a wonderful explanation for Nikki's germ obsession. Her brother in hospital in a coma. Coma patients are susceptible to infections, so Nikki's obsession becomes clear, and suddenly very poignant, rather than an irritation. It was also the last time we saw Nikki. I must admit I would like to see her return. If only so we can find out if her brother survived or not.
  • Nine Lives. This one was written in conjunction with Dan E. Fesman and David J. North. The first appearance of Tobias Fornell for season 6. The episode gave us one of the best indications yet on just how close the friendship between Gibbs and Fornell really is. When Gibbs turns up at the Hoover Building to support Fornell who is about to be carpeted by his Director. An appearance that doesn't surprise Fornell at all. Fornell: She said you'd be here. Gibbs: Who? Fornell: Our ex wife. Another interesting hint. Fornell obviously gets on better with Diane than Gibbs did. He can still talk to her when he has problems. I love it when the writers give us small hints about the characters.
Both episodes were good strong episodes plot wise and both gave us small pieces of character development. I hope we see many more scripts from Linda Burstyn during season 7 and beyond.

Today's entry is about the jitteriness of NCIS fans who jumped the gun voting on the poll designed for voting POST premiere airing, PRIOR to the same. As always comments are welcome
