LEAST FAVORITE RECURRING CHARACTERS

29th August 2009

We all have our favorite recurring characters, but what about our least favorite ones? The ones we hope never to see again on the show. I am sure we all have them. Mine are as follows.

  • Hollis Mann. This will surprise no-one that knows me. The character annoyed me from the first time she was introduced. Domineering, aggressive, totally in your face. I was bewildered that the writers could think that a man like Gibbs could fall for a woman like that. I was never happier than when she was written out of the show. I am still hoping for news to came from Hawaii that she is a shark snack.
  • Jeanne Benoit. Whiny, needy, clinging and just downright irritating. Was pleased when she was written out, and her vindictive accusation of murder against Tony did not surprise me in the least.
  • Agent Sacks. If we ever see that FBI irritant again it will be too soon. Smug, superior and a pain in the proverbial.
  • Agent Carlson. Another exercise in smug superiority. We definitely won't be seeing him again. He was killed off in the season 2 episode "The Boneyard".
  • Jules. We've only met her once, but she is supposed to be recurring. Not really enough time to say she is one of my least favorite recurring characters, but she is certainly in the starters blocks.
Surprisingly, these are the only recurring characters that I really haven't liked. I am sure you have different ones and I would like to hear about them.

SUMMER WEEKENDS & FICKLE NCIS FANS

29th August

The title of this blog entry is serious, in case there's anyway out there scoffing at it. Believe me a truer word has never been written here during a summer weekend.

Since the end of S6 at the end of May, i.e. precursor to the summer season; there has been a flurry of movement from Monday to Thursday, then come Friday "si te he visto, no me acuerdo", until the following Monday.

Admittedly, our membership has continued to rise over this period, and in fact, quite a few people join over the weekend, but it's more an "hola y hasta luego". A kind of better clock in before the boss tears me off a strip, rather like those who skive classes at school, they arrive and remain until the tutor has called the register, so the parents don't find out, then skive off the rest of the day. This seems to be the case here, however, don't go thinking the members of the satellite wikis are a bunch of goody two shoes, because they're not. They are just as bad, and perhaps even worse in some instances.

I do appreciate that at times it's a bind to switch on your PC, log in and take a wander round, because I have the same problem, except that when duty calls.... Plus the fact being freelance, my weekend could be during the week while the rest of you are slogging at school or work, poor blighters!!!

Nevertheless, it's interesting to note, that from Friday to Sunday inclusive, I see the same members again and again, doing their bit to keep the site moving, so that it won't stagnate. These are obviously true fans, and not fairweather (perhaps badweather would be more appropriate in this instance given the circumstances - LOL) fans. This is by no means a criticism, since if I weren't a Mod I'd probably do the same myself; and confess I haven't been on that much either.

In general, movement is slow in summer months with the good weather, which is perfectly logical not to mention healthy, since we all need our daily dose of vitamin D, if we wish to reduce the percentage of osteoporosis, when we become senior citizens. Furthermore, our eyes also need the rest from the screen, and our wrists from the keyboard to minimise RSI.

Nonetheless, I trust this summer lapse, and in particular the weekend absenteeism is because you're gathering strength and preparing yourselves for the commencement of Season 7 on 22nd September, otherwise I'm going to start making you all write out on your profiles 5000 times (first offenders - it doubles for frequent offenders!!): I must log in to the NCIS wiki Monday to Sunday, and report in any NCIS thread or page, unless I can provide a medical certificate signed by 3 different doctors stating I am unable to do so.

SEASON 7 - JUST ROUND THE CORNER

29th August

Season 7 is almost upon us, less than 30 days away, and one can feel the tension among everyone here, particularly those of you living in the US and Canada, who get to watch it before the rest of us. In the Spanish State we have seen up to and including Bounce from Season 6, meaning we still have quite a few episodes left before we reach Aliyah and as for Season 7...... We depend upon the whims of Spanish programmers. The rest of Europe finds itself in a similar situation, although of course with internet, it is possible to view episodes at the same time as the US.

Just how did we survive prior to the advent of internet and global communications? Probably with far less angst than we do now, at least before those of us in Europe had little info regarding when US series were aired, so when they reached us, there was no more anticipation than if it were say a Spanish / French / British one, etc. Now, however, information reaches us at the same time, and even if though a large number of us on this site are still viewing Season 6 (some countries are still pending this season too!!), yet, the anticipation regarding the forthcoming season is very much the same. Why? Well because even without reading the synopses of all the S6 episodes we know about the dramatic season ending, the photos are here, there are animated discussions, and like panic it is contagious. Of course, the US media hype it, just to move the angst up a notch or two, so the fans will be seated before their TV sets / PC screens on the day of the S7 premiere, with the adrenaline pumping from the anticipation.

The response to this information not to mention media hype is rather like the Pavlov Test on dogs, maybe we don't salivate at the mention of NCIS, Season 7, TIVA, etc., but heart rate and blood pressure undoubtedly increase; and maybe even there will be those who salivate at the thought..

With all this hype, does this mean episode 1 of Season7 will be an anti-climax?? Always a possibility, since we, the public have a tendency to create our own expectation of what we want to see, therein lies the crux of the matter. Exceeding the previous season's excellent ratings is no mean feat, since the better you do, the more people expect. Essentially, this functions as an incentive for both cast and scriptwriters, however, pulling it off is another kettle of fish. I'm confident they will, since to date I have not been deceived, and a priori I think it unlikely this will happen. Why? Because this series is a long distance runner not a sprinter, which means it has stamina / staying power, call it what you will, and at the end of the day this is what counts. Series, which become overnight hits are the ones, which really have their work cut out, unlike NCIS or any other series in the same vein, where through hard graft and constancy have attained a higher ranking each season. In a way, NCIS can be likened to the tortoise in the Aesop's fable the Hare and the Tortoise, where the hare represents the overnight success or sprinter, and the tortoise, NCIS, with their slow and steady wins the race.

No doubt this topic will be re-visited as the premiere approaches.

DESMENUDIZANDO A DINOZZO
28th August

RASGOS BUENOS RASGOS MALOS
  1. Leal 100%
  2. Trabajador
  3. Tiene inciativa
  4. Alegre
  1. Inseguro
  2. Algo inmaduro
  3. Don Juan
  4. Toma riesgos
