MINIMUM SECURITY

5th September 2010

A mysterious death and smuggled emeralds take the NCIS team on a trip to Gitmo.

There is a lot to love about this season 1 episode. For a start it introduces NCIS Special Agent Paula Cassidy. "Minimum Security" also has probably one of THE most loved NCIS scenes of all times. I refer to Tony waking up to find he is sharing his bed with an iguana. The screaming and then Gibbs and Kate bursting in with guns drawn is hysterically funny. As is Kate's reaction when she discovers that Tony sleeps naked! Kate just stands there, licks her lips and ogles. Much to Tony's embarrassment.

Other good scenes are Kate and Tony arguing over the best bedroom. An argument that Gibbs settles by chucking their bags into the hall and claiming the bedroom for himself.

Abby gathering perfume and Ducky talking about his mother wearing Chanel No 5 in the same manner that Marilyn Monroe did. Another great Abby/Ducky scene was Ducky coming into the lab to find Abby wading through porn on the deceased's computer. There are shades of Dirty Old Man Ducky from the JAG episodes "Ice Queen" and "Meltdown" in the scene, but much softer.

We also see that the character of Tony has yet to become the classic film buff of later series. In "Minimum Security" he does not know of the movie "Shane" or the actor Alan Ladd. Nor has he ever seen "The Maltese Falcon". Something that would make the later Tony whack the earlier version of himself around the head for!

"Minimum Security" also had some great lines to remember it by.

Gibbs: Nope. I don't use cologne. The women I date find the smell of sawdust sexy. That's probably why I don't date many women.

Gibbs: You'd better have a good reason for spilling my coffee.

Tony: Any preference for the remaining bedrooms?
Kate: No. They are both equally crappy.

Gibbs: I need coffee.

Tony: Miss me?
Paula: Like herpes.

Gibbs: We're at the same agency. Not on the same team.

Gibbs: Why is Special Agent DiNozzo sorry?
Paula: He lost his chance to get laid.

Abby: Perfume is the most powerful accessory a woman can wear.

Gibbs: So she and Saeed were doing the horizontal salsa.

Gibbs: Romance between agents, Kate, never works.

Abby: The files are too big.
Ducky: And not just the files!

Tony: The Ice Queen was an act?
Paula: No. Letting you think I was melting was.

Gibbs: Why is it that women always want to fix things that don't need fixing?
Kate: It makes us feel all warm inside.
Gibbs: So does a bottle of scotch, and it doesn't cost you a house.

TRENT KORT REVISITED

2nd September 2010

I got a great response to my blog on whether or not Trent Kort had outlived his usefulness to the show. I got a very mixed reaction to that blog.

It seems Trent Kort is more of a 'love to hate' character to fans than Leon Vance is.

The general agreement is that while people want to see Trent Kort return, it is very hard to realistically see how. The CIA and NCIS don't really having matching spheres of influence. CIA operates overseas and is forbidden by its charter of operations to run missions on US soil; our NCIS major crime team are very rarely anywhere else!

The mutual dislike between Tony and Kort is why the fans like the character. As HardKore71 put it"...the level of hatred between the two is refreshing." They also make for some really good humorous scenes. Remember Tony and Kort in the elevator in "Bury Your Dead"? My personal favorite would have to be the scene outside MTAC in "Dead Reckoning". Tony really elevated sarcasm to an art form in that scene.

The bottom line is, bring back Trent Kort, but only if the plot line is realistic and not contrived.

EVOLUTION OF LEON VANCE

1st September 2010

Since his introduction in season 5's "Internal Affairs", the character of Leon Vance has grown a lot.

Coming across from California to take control of NCIS while Jenny and the team were under investigation for the murder of Rene Benoit, his cold manner immediately won him a lot of enemies amongst the fans. However, cold manner not withstanding one thing was obvious, Leon Vance had the best interests of NCIS at heart.

As early as "Judgment Day", the by-the-book Vance showed a tendency to look the other way when it was expedient. He helped cover up the circumstances of Jenny's death by claiming she died in a gas fire in her home.

Early in season 6 we see Leon as a man feeling his way in his role. He trust Gibbs' instincts, but doesn't feel comfortable in asking for his help, so pitch forks him into the middle of a new team hoping Gibbs will spot something wrong with one of the new people.

At this point Leon wants everyone to be by the book. He doesn't yet understand that the agency needs different sorts of people. He wants his people to be more like him and less like Gibbs. But as season 6 moves into season 7, Vance begins to realize that the diversity of personalities within NCIS is one of its greatest strengths. This realization strengthens Vance's grip on his position.

By early season 7 Leon is comfortable enough to create precedent within the agency. To be an NCIS agent you must be a US citizen. Vance allows Ziva to become a probationary NCIS agent on the proviso that she becomes a US citizen. Something unheard of in federal agencies.

Vance has learned to trust his people, and they are beginning to trust him. Vance and Gibbs now have a strong working partnership. Even though they may not realize it, the two men's very different styles compliment each other.

Leon Vance has grown enormously in two and a half seasons. Contrast his first appearance in "Internal Affairs" when he tells Gibbs that he doesn't believe in close relationships between management and staff, to "Rule Fifty One". In "Rule Fifty One", Leon, beaming with pride, sits and watches Ziva become a US citizen.

It will be interesting to see who Leon Vance further evolves in season 8 and beyond.

CAGED

31st August 2010

In "Caged", McGee is trapped in a woman's prison during a riot that occurred after a prison guard is murdered.

It is almost impossible to select good scenes from this episode. Why? Because they are all good. "Caged" is probably one of the greatest NCIS episodes of all times. Every scene is simply jam packed with great moments. If I have to pick favorite moments there are three that come readily mind when I think about this episode.

McGee finally losing his temper and yelling at the women. They all stand all look at him as if a cute little puppy suddenly decided to gnaw their ankles off. The scene is all the more powerful because we know McGee doesn't lose his temper.

When Celia Roberts confesses to murdering the guard. Even though we know she didn't do it. She sacrifices herself to protect the real killer, Sharon Bellows, and Sharon's children. She also confesses to the murder we know she did do, as a thank you to McGee.

The look Gibbs gives McGee at the conclusion of the above scene. A look full of pride. This flows on, because in the next scene as they walk into the squad room, Gibbs does something he very rarely does. He calls McGee "Tim".

Finally McGee, with his new found confidence, ripping into the mechanic who has been screwing him around for days. NCIS' baby is all growed up.

"Caged" has some really good lines.

McGee: My crank shaft has worn out.

Tony: People can be loved for their weaknesses as much as their strengths.
Gibbs: You must be really well loved, DiNozzo.

Tony: It's about a psycho sex crazed cop.
McGee: The Life and Times of Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo.

Tony: He's toast, isn't he?
Ziva: Oh yes. Burnt toast.

Tony: I've got a bad feeling about Bozo and his three ring circus.

McGee: We need to find his killer.
Gibbs: Yeah. In a room full of them.

Warden: It's my prison.
Gibbs: Not for long. You pee in a cup lately?

Tony: Sometimes this job sucks.

Ziva: Did any of them hurt you, McGee? I will kick their ass.

Tony: Wow! Who would believe McGee would grow a pair in a woman's prison?
