NCIS SEASON 6 - PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS

25th July 2009

With season 6 now gone, and the dvd release only a month a way, I thought I would take a look back at season 6 and the things that were, for me, highlights of the season. To pick a few highlights from this last season is a difficult thing for me to do, as season 6 has to be my personal favorite. I have enjoyed every episode and would be hard pressed to pick a favorite episode from this season.

My personal highlights for season 6 are (in no particular order):

  • Learning about Gibbs' past and meeting his father (played by the wonderful Ralph Waite) in the episode "Heartland".
  • Learning more about Gibbs' past and meeting up with Mike Franks again in "Deliverance".
  • The hilarious subplot of who ate Abby's cupcake in "Capitol Offense".
  • The appearance of Tobias Fornell in "Nine Lives" and "Semper Fidelis" (it's not a season of NCIS without at least one appearance by Fornell).
  • The story arc covered from "Last Man Standing" through to "Dagger".
  • Tony on horseback in "South by Southwest".
  • Gibbs' horsemanship in "South by Southwest".
  • The growth of Tony in "Bounce".
  • Learning about Vance and his family in "Knockout".
  • Learning about Ducky's past in "Broken Bird".
  • The appearance of Trent Kort in "Broken Bird" and "Dead Reckoning".
  • Five scripts by my favorite scriptwriter Jesse Stern ("Heartland", "Cloak", "Broken Bird", "Knockout" and "Semper Fidelis").
  • The mysterious removal of Gibbs' boat from his basement. It was there in "Semper Fidelis", gone in "Aliyah".
Do you agree or disagree with my choices? Let me know your thoughts, and I'll do another blog on the subject when I have your feedback.

NCIS ON DVD - FEATURETTES - REGIONS - DUBBING

24th July 2009

My entry here today deals with NCIS on DVD, the featurettes, region formats and dubbing. As you probably all know Season 6 comes out next month in the US (+Canada), which is format Region 1, so far so good. Now for some strange reason in this age of state-of-the-art technology it takes around another 4 or 5 months (more or less) to be released in Western/Central Europe, which is Region 2 and Oceania, which is Region 4 even longer!!! Time lapse apart, one of the things, which I find difficult to comprehend is, how come the DVDs in Region formats 2 to 6 have fewer featurettes than region 1, i.e. the US and Canada. I understand the cost of dubbing and subtitling but in the case of the UK, Republic of Ireland and Oceania, this is not a problem as English is the language used. Admittedly some of us can view Region 1 DVDs on our PCs if they're new models (my case) or on multi-region DVD players (MargyW's case), however, a large number of people in Regions 2 to 6, cannot afford this possibility. For example, in Spain I know multi-region DVD palyers are expensive, so this limits the case. All this has yet to explain why Region 1 format has more featurettes than the rest, since in the case of films this is not the case.

Another query, quibble call it what you will, given the popularity of the series throughout the world and the fact it is dubbed in a great many countries, how come the DVDs only offer the option of viewing in French, German and Italian apart from English, despite the fact Spanish is more widely spoken than any of these 3 European languages (English excluded), this means for Spanish speaking fans of the series who don't master the English language purchasing the DVD is a waste of money; and I'm not only talking about fans from the Spanish State but also Mexico, Central and South America.

Next, we come to the question of subtitles, several Nordic languages are offered, and if I remember rightly Greek and/or Russian, what about viewers in say China, Spanish speaking countries, Sri Lanka, etc.

Many years ago, when DVDs didn't exist and we only had videos, well perhaps these differences in regions could have been understood, although curiously enough there were fewer video region formats than for DVD, plus the fact distribution of US series to Europe and the rest of the world came much later than it does now, the world was a little less globalised so to speak. However, today, it's ironic that a TV series in this case NCIS, although I could be talking about several others in the same respect, should take so long to produce DVDs in formats other than that of Region 1, should provide fewer featurettes for Regions 2 to 6, when in theory, it's a question of copying or recording on to a master copy in the different regions, along with the different languages. I find all this very difficult to understand, particularly when newer series and perhaps with a lesser impact don't have this problem.

It seems a pity that fans living outside the US and Canada should suffer in this way, plus the fact, I firmly believe there would be more fans if we were all on equal footing here, as in the case of CSI or films like the Harry Potter series - this latter is released worldwide on the same day in the different languages into which it has been dubbed - I know they have a bigger budget, however, with the cost of cinema today there are far more TV viewers than there are cinema-goers.

Anyhow, I'd be interested to know what other people think about this matter, I mean I've expounded on the subject as if it were something straightforward, and I'm aware that this might not be the case at all.

I've set up a discussion thread on this, since I think it's an interesting topic, and I know it's one, which people comment/have commented on from time to time. The floor is yours, fans of NCIS

MUSE WATSON - HIS BATTLE

23rd July 2009

NCIS Fan favorite Muse Watson, who plays Mike Franks, has a battle on his hands. Possibly the battle of his life. Muse is battling an addiction to prescription painkillers given to him for a medical condition. Today Muse went public about his fight because, in his words,"...this is a silent killer people need to know about." Muse isn't fighting this battle alone. He has the support of his wife, and of a team of doctors. I know this is a battle that Muse will win.

If anyone would like to send a message of support to Muse, then please message me and I will pass it in.

NCIS BLOGUEANDO QUE ES GERUNDIO + Muse WatsonMUSE WATSON ENFERMO

23rd July 2009

It's sad to learn about Muse Watson's battle with prescription painkillers but hopefuly he can overcome this addiction before it consumes him. It's way too easy to get addicted to those things, a great fear of my own when they're prescribed for me. Good luck Muse!!
