GIBBS AND KIDS
30th August 2010
Of all of the characters, none has more of a rapport with children than Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
The first time we see this in NCIS is early in season 1, when Gibbs finishes building a tree house for Billy Fuentes, a boy whose Marine father has been murdered.
Gibbs relates well to kids. He doesn't talk down to them, which is appreciated by the kids. He is open and honest, and doesn't make false promises.
In "Honor Code" Gibbs tells Jenny he likes children because "When they lie, they don't have the guile to get away with it." In other words, you know where you are with children. Of course he could have been having a subtle dig at Jenny, but that's for another blog.
In "Lost and Found", young Carson instinctively trusts Gibbs. More than he does Tim, which is odd, when you think about it, because he knows Tim. McGee is his scout leader after all. But it is Gibbs Carson turns to to get help for his father.
The burning question is, where does Gibbs get his affinity for traumatized children from? For the answer to that question we have to go pre-NCIS. Back to the JAG episode "Ice Queen". Back to the first time we see Gibbs with a traumatized child. A young boy who found a badly decomposed body. Gibbs is gentle with him. When the boy is crying that every time he goes to sleep he will see the body, Gibbs tell him no he won't. All he has to do is tell himself he's not going to see it any more. The boy is skeptical, until Gibbs tells him it worked for him! Back when Gibbs was the same age as that young boy, he saw something that deeply traumatized him. Gibbs doesn't say what it is he saw, but it affected him deeply, but as a man gave him huge empathy with emotionally distressed children.
A storyline I would like to see explored is what happened to Gibbs as a young boy. What did he see that traumatized him so deeply? Is it tied in to the death of his mother? Did he perhaps see his mother murdered? Or discover her body? It is very much something I would like to see covered by the writers, if not in this season, then in a subsequent one.

TRIBES
29th August 2010
In this season 5 episode, a Muslim Marine is murdered on his way home from the mosque. Is this a robbery gone wrong, or something more sinister?
This was not one of the stand out episodes of season 5, but was still good, solid NCIS. It introduced us to FBI agent Brent Langer. It also gave us a glimpse into Ducky's past. And McGee's enormous coffee mug had to be seen to be believed.
"Tribes" had several good scenes. The scene with Gibbs and Langer in Jenny's office. Jenny getting more an more frustrated with the cosy "old boys" backslapping of Gibbs and Langer.
Tony's jealousy of Brent Langer was good. It would have been good to see those two characters together. Langer would have been more than a match for Tony.
Ducky's reasons for not wanting to perform the autopsy on the dead Marine. I really wanted to slap Jenny senseless. She had no compassion for Ducky.
Gibbs and Langer in Gibbs' basement. Langer risked his career with the FBI to give information to Gibbs. It was in this scene that the seeds of Langer's return to NCIS were sown. And therefore the seeds of his death. Watched with knowledge of the events of "Last Man Standing", the scene takes on much more significance than it had when "Tribes" first aired.
"Tribes" had a few good lines.
Tony: I'm not going to get between a chick and her flick.
Tony: Did your son have any enemies?
Bakur: Ignorance, intolerance, hatred.
Tony: Any with first names?
Ducky: I only tell you what the body tells me.
Gibbs: Ask different questions, Duck.
Tony: Hell, the fall will probably kill ya.
Ziva: Butch Cassidy and the Sunrise Kid.
McGee: We'll flip for it.
Ziva: If I flip you, you will get hurt.
Langer: If you guys find anything out...
Jenny: You'll be the last to know.
Ducky: This, my dear Officer David, is what is called an "unexpected development".
Gibbs: Abbs. Loose the bubblewrap.
Langer: You still working on that damn boat?
Gibbs: Finished it twice.
Gibbs: You are still a pain in the ass.
Langer: I learned from the best.

Today I thought I would take another look at the season 6 episode "Cloak".
This episode rates amongst fans as one of the best of season 6 for a number of reasons. The powerful and complex story line, the introduction of SecNav, but most fans like Tony as we saw him in this episode. Angry, frustrated, but still managed to maintain his sense of humor. Though the elevator scene with Ziva just confused most people, myself included. It seemed to have no point to it, then or later.
The following scene in autopsy with both Tony and Ducky angry with Gibbs is one that fans responded too. Gibbs placating both Ducky and Tony made for an interesting scene. Gibbs was treating Tony as an equal, not a subordinate. Not something we see very often.
But amongst the drama and the angst, "Cloak" produced one of the best McGee lines ever: "Sorry your girlfriend turned out to be a Cylon"

Today I thought I would look at the relationship between Mike Franks and Tony DiNozzo.
When they first met, there was not a lot of respect between the two men. In some ways they were like two dogs circling a bone. The bone being Gibbs. Gibbs was Mike's probie. Tony was Gibbs' probie. Both felt slightly threatened by the other. Mike was part of Gibbs' past that Tony did not know about and could not share. Tony is part of Gibbs' present which Mike knows that, being retired, he cannot share.
In season 4, Mike shows what could almost be contempt for Tony. When Gibbs places Mike under Tony's protection, Mike is almost derisive. Tony's reassuring comment of "You're in safe hands now, Mike." Is greeted with "I've seen your hands, DiNozzo, they don't impress me." A throw away line, yes. But a very telling one. Mike, like Gibbs, is a hardened man. One who has labored manually and has the hard hands of a working man. Tony, by contrast, has the soft hands of someone who has never done any physical labor in his life. The two men are worlds apart.
The men don't have much interaction in season 5. Apart from Tony, along with Ziva, attempting to stop Vance from discovering that Mike is in Washington, DC and that Mike was with Jenny when she was killed.
Season 6 saw Tony desperately wanting information about Gibbs' past from Mike. He didn't get it. Mike simply played with him like a cat with a mouse.
Mike and Tony's last interaction came during the season 7 finale "Rule Fifty One". Mike takes Tony by surprise, bailing him up against a wall. There is however, a distinct change in Mike's attitude to Tony. He has started to see Tony as a real man. Mike acknowledges the change by calling Tony what he still calls Gibbs....Probie.
I think we may see Mike take Tony under his wing a little in season 8. In season 7 Mike was forced to the realization that Gibbs is no longer his probie in the episode "Outlaws and Inlaws" when Gibbs sees through his story and calls him on it. Mike needs a probie...I think he's decided that Tony fits that role. There is much that Mike could teach Tony, and I think we would all enjoy watching the lessons.

The very scene you describe is the one that completely hooked me on NCIS. I was courious about the show but thought it could not be as good as JAG. That scene told me how wrong I was! Also made Jethro Gibbs someone who I wanted to see more of and to find what else was under the blue eyes.

"We keep wandering off topic. It is pretty obvious that Ziva is not prejudiced. Remember "Suspicion"? Ziva protects the Iranian defector from the the redneck Sheriff's deputy.
She also wanted to go to Baghdad in "In the Zone". If she was prejudiced she wouldn't want to go anywhere where the was a concentration of the people she hated. You're not going to see a Neo-Nazi at a Bar Mitzvah, for example. Vance refused to send her to protect her. SHE would be the target of prejudice in Baghdad. " I felt she was more offended by the deputy than anthing else, and she knew that man didn't like her or the republican guard defector. It wasn't out of prejudice, it was for her safety and theirs. They would view her as an enemy.

"You are right - Mike didn't even know the team - why should he actually care for them? He didn't - except for the fact that he knew Gibbs did.
I believe the remark about Tony's hands was made because Mike was ticked off at Gibbs for making him have a protection detail. However, like many people, I'm sure that Mike was not impressed with Tony at first especially when Tony "Found" him when he was talking to Gibbs, lol. But I am of the opinion that after being around Tony many times now, he has seen that Tony is a very competent agent who is loyal to Gibbs and watches his back. This, in itself, would make Mike warm up to Tony.
Does Tony irritate Mike? Sure he does. Just like Mike irritates Tony. This was evident in the scene in I&O when they were discussing knocking at the door, lol. Ducky has said that Tony is a lot like Gibbs was when he was younger and I think that Mike is seeing this as well and that is why he called him "Probie" in Rule 51.
I really hope that the writers do not skim over the time in Mexico with Mike and Tony - I was really looking forward to seeing them work together to help the man they both care about - Gibbs." I too am hoping to see Mike and Tony work together in Mexico. The season 8 premiere follows on directly after "Rule Fifty One" time wise, and we know Mike is in it, so hopefully we will see them together.
