FAVORITE MCGEE NICKNAMES REVISITED

5th August 2010

I got a good response to my blog on the many nicknames of Timothy McGee. People rushed to share their favorites. Below is a list of those nicknames that were the most popular (in no particular order).

  • Probilicious
  • Elf Lord
  • McGiggle
  • McGoogle
  • McSmartyPants
  • McMotherboard
Interestingly, when it came to nicknames, most people hated in "Borderland" when Alejandro Rivera called McGee "McGoo". Not delivered with affection, as the other nicknames are, but with derision. Gottahavemyncis commented that that was when certainty set in that Rivera was a villain.

Here's hoping the season 8 will come up with a lot more affectionate nicknames for our favorite geek.

GIBBS AND MCGEE

4th August 2010

Another in my series of looks at the interpersonal relationships on NCIS. This time I am turning the microscope on Gibbs and McGee.

Whilst not as close as Gibbs and Tony are, Gibbs and McGee have a fairly strong relationship.

Their first meeting was not auspicious. When Gibbs first sets eyes on McGee he is wearing a face mask and trying not to vomit. Gibbs first words about McGee were "Get Michael Jackson out of here before he ralphs." However, Gibbs eventually recognized that McGee had skills that would be useful to him and to the team and had him reassigned from Norfolk to Washington, DC. He did realize early on that McGee was not going to be easy to categorize. Gibbs' grin when he watches McGee tell Tony that he got a tattoo on his butt to impress Abby was almost that of a proud father.

In "Witness" Gibbs allows McGee to run a case, purely because McGee has a gut feeling, and part of Gibbs training of the others is to teach them to trust their instincts. As he says to Tony much later "Trust your gut." To which Tony replies mournfully "I'd rather trust yours."

In "Twisted Sister" when McGee tries to help his sister, Gibbs is furious that McGee didn't come to him. And also hurt that McGee didn't trust him. However, he understands McGee's position and does what he can to help McGee. Even running interference when Jenny tries to manipulate McGee into resigning from NCIS.

Several times throughout NCIS Gibbs has brought McGee coffee when he has been working exceptionally hard and/or exceptionally late.

On one occasion Gibbs unbends enough to call McGee "Tim". Much to McGee's confusion. Though the confusion may have been caused by the fact that Gibbs had just spotted lipstick on McGee's collar. Gibbs approved, simply telling McGee not to ever get married.

When McGee is moved to the sub-basement with the geek squad in season 6, one thing he misses is working under Gibbs.

McGee rarely gets head slaps from Gibbs. Occasional double-handers when his and Tony's bickering has got out of control. And the odd focus slap, as in "Ignition" when McGee is running off at the mouth about jet-packs.

Gibbs has high enough regard of McGee's abilities as a field agent to give him control of the case in "Ignition". For Gibbs, there is probably no higher praise than that.

I look forward to watching the relationship between Gibbs and McGee growing stronger.

CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

3rd August 2010

In this season 5 episode a violent, delusional Marine, believing he is still in Iraq escapes from Bethesda Hospital. Has he been the subject of a military medical experiment?

Written by Jesse Stern, "Corporal Punishment" is particularly notable for the introduction of the character of Damon Werth, played by Paul Telfer. Since "Corporal Punishment" the character of Damon Werth has made two more appearances and is something of a fan favorite.

This episode has several great scenes. Tony giving the speech from "The Fugitive". It is always amusing to see an actor deliberately playing a ham...as though unable to act. Ducky and Gibbs discussing PTSD made for a good scene.

Any scene Paul Telfer was in, however, he stole. Damon Werth beating up the team comes to mind. The scene in interrogation with Gibbs gave us great performances from both Mark and Paul. Damon responds instinctively to the authority in Gibbs' voice, and then to the rough gentleness. It is a scene that always has the tears pricking my eyes. The scene in the hospital where Damon slams Ziva against the wall and stares into her eyes. Not a word is spoken, but the scene is both powerful and moving. As Damon slides down the wall and Ziva gathers him into her arms and cradles his head. The final poignant scene as Gibbs leaves his own Silver Star on the bedside table of the now disgraced Cpl Damon Werth.

To counterpoint the intensity of this episode, we did have the wonderful scene of Tony totally whacked out on painkillers.

"Corporal Punishment" gave us some great lines.

Tony: I've been working on my six pack. Abs.
Ziva: You have been drinking with Abby?

Tony: Did you kill Houdini?
Ziva: It is possible. I do not remember all their names.

Senator's Aide Vincent: This could be a PR disaster.
Gibbs: That's always my primary concern.

Ziva: Do any of your ideas come from reality?
Tony: Yes. Just not your reality.

Gibbs: Leathernecks nicknamed him Corporal Punishment.

Karen Sutherland: Broken bodies are easier to heal than broken minds.

Gibbs: What seems to be the problem, Marine?
Werth: I want to kill someone, sir!

Ducky: Someone is using that man as a lab rat.

McGee: Someone turned Werth into Captain America.

Tony: You like him.
Ziva: I found him...powerful.
McGee: You really like him.

Gibbs: Easy on the painkillers, DiNozzo.

Gibbs: Courage doesn't have anything to do with medals. You run towards the gunfire not away from it.

PALMER AND ABBY

2nd August 2010

This is not the strongest of relationships on NCIS. On the surface you would think that the Goth forensic scientist and the autopsy gremlin would be a good friendship pairing. However, things are not always what they seem.

Palmer can do something that very few people are capable of. He can weird Abby out. In season 3's "Head Case" Abby's response to Palmer's comment, "White meat or dark?" was to tell him the remark was creepy. Also in season 5's "About Face", Abby is not very happy to discover Palmer has a shoe fetish and is fixating on her shoes as well as Ziva's.

Yet, Abby does trust Palmer. When she needs assistance entertaining young Carson in "Lost and Found", it is Palmer she calls on for help.

Palmer tries hard to cover for Abby in season 6's "Knock Out", telling Vance that the reason that the smell of sawdust is in the lab is not because Gibbs has been there, but because Abby is building a coffin! Not actually a major help, but he meant well.

Apart from drooling over her shoes, there is no sexual aspect to Palmer and Abby's relationship. In season 4's "Witch Hunt", Palmer has a grin from ear to ear anticipating Tony and McGee's reaction to Abby's costume. It is pretty obvious that he realized how they would react, but hadn't had the same reaction himself.

I get the feeling that Abby views Palmer as an annoying little brother. He probably reminds her of her own brother. In Palmer's case, it is pretty clear that he has a great deal of admiration for Abby.
