Relationship Time Line
Season 4
On this page (written when the relationship seemed likely to blossom...): notes on their meeting in "Sandblast", getting together in "Sharif Returns", the relationship explosion in "Skeletons", the bonding in "Grace Period", the commit or not commit challenge in "In the Dark" and the revelation of all his marriages (all 4, not 3) in "Ex-Files".

Lt. Col. Mann and Gibbs met in the Season 4 episode "Sandblast". Just look at the goofy grin on his face in this photo. He is besotted before he even realizes it. Ziva, upon observing their initial meeting, is in no doubt of what is going on: when asked "what's happening?" by a colleague, she replies "Gibbs just met his fourth ex-wife".

There was an attraction between the two but nothing became of it until the episode "Sharif Returns", where the two reunite and Gibbs falls victim to Sharif. It is Mann who saves his life, shooting Sharif when Gibbs is felled by the poison that Sharif cunningly put on his tools, to be absorbed through his skin. The antidote is administered and he recovers immediately, sufficient to go over to her place and they end up kissing and the
episode ends. The night does not: he stayed.

We don't hear anything about the two of them for a few episodes until the episode "Skeletons" where we find out that Gibbs and the Col. hadn't talked in about 6 weeks. Gibbs, upon being confronted by Mann, in front of his team, exhibits the most uncomfortable body language possible. Their conversation, on the surface, is innocuous enough but his team are rapidly averting their eyes and pretending to be deaf. Gibbs commands them to guard the perimeter and disappears indoors to the crime scene with Mann where they have a politely worded rip-roaring row about who was supposed to phone whom. They decide to let the case determine whether they stay in contact with each other: if they find more bodies, they have to work together - they immediately find more bodies. Their discourse, with the dual layers of talking about the case whilst really having a row about their relationship, is one of the finer pieces of dialogue to be found in a TV show. The gun-shy Gibbs admits that he "didn't think the last time they saw each other would be the last time they saw each other": both are too proud to admit they were in the wrong. But by the end of the episode, they are driving in a car, bantering with each other, and she is buttering his ego.

Later in the episode "Grace Period" we see that they are indeed in a relationship. The episode begins with Mann further buttering Gibbs' ego by pretending to need baseball coaching. He gives her hands-on wrap-around guidance, which puts him in a good position to nuzzle her neck with kisses. There is clear and obvious affection and intimacy between them. They have carved out time to spend together and both enjoy outdoors, sporty recreation. Having coached her, he tells her to have a go. She hesitates: he encourages further. She demonstrates. Immense skill. She hits the ball out of the practice nets, time after time. She is the new captain of the softball team but, it seems, because she is a skilled player, not because she is a Lt Col. Gibbs is rueful.

The big Season 4 development in the relationship comes with a showdown in the episode "In the Dark", where a blind photographer finds out that his assistant (who acts as his eyes) has been in love with him but hiding it because of the reaction the photographer would have. The photographer hears the confession of love from the safety of the observation room (the assistant is being interrogated by Ziva who works out that the assistant's motive is that she is in love and the assistant pleads for her not to tell her boss). Gibbs moves to have the sound cut off . The photographer points out that it is never too late to find out the most important things in life. Gibbs, who has previously been confronted by Mann with a demand that he work out whether he is going to commit to a relationship or not, and who has shied away from making that commitment, listens and learns. Gibbs admires the photographer who uses his brain power to make up for his lack of eyesight: he trusts the man's insight.

So when Mann returns from handing over her work to her replacement, upon her retirement from the Army, she finds Gibbs in her flat doing plumbing work that he had started before she left. But he has sped up the work: Mann interprets this as him trying to finish up their relationship. She lets rip and tells him "you ought to want me and the fact that you don't makes me wonder why I ever wanted you in the first place". Having been told to keep quiet, Gibbs stays silent. Mann then demands that he speak. He sighs and moves to the door of the bathroom. He confesses that, while she was away, he thought he would fix all her plumbing, so he has ripped her bathroom to pieces. He was trying to finish the previous small job before she came home because the rest of the bathroom was a big job. Mann realises that he has committed to her by taking on a plumbing job that will take time. She realizes that she has been an idiot. He agrees. She kisses him fervently and asks how she can make it up.

To Gibbs' lasting credit, instead of asking for sex, he merely holds up a trowel, indicating that she can help do the work on the bathroom. And this despite the fact that he already knows that she is fairly inexperienced and thus inept at DIY work. Ah. True love.

Season 5
Season 5, "Ex-files" Mann learns of Shannon and Kelly for the first time, and not from Gibbs. Things go well, although Gibbs won't talk about why he never told her about his first wife. Mann wisely realizes that he hasn't put it behind him, despite what he says. But by the end of the episode they are happy...until Mann hits play on the tape in Gibbs' basement, and realizes that he still listens to the tape his wife and daughter sent to him in Iraq, with the 'come home soon' and 'we love you Jethro' messages. And he watches her listening to his first wife and child, and there is no lightness in him. Mann's eyes mist with tears: grief for them, for Jethro and herself.
Season 5, "Lost & Found" , we get closure: Jen is sitting at her desk, devouring a news article in the Stars and Stripes newspaper which has a large photo of Hollis Mann in uniform, unsmiling, at her farewell party held by the Army in Washington. It reports she is going to Hawaii and wants to meet new people. Jen hides the paper from Jethro. Clearly he is not talking about Mann. Later in the episode, Jen invites him to stay at her house (he had reason to visit on business) but he declines.

I started watching Season 5 before I had seen most of Season 4, so I didn't really know much about Hollis except that she was Gibbs' girlfriend.

Now that I have seen all of Season 4 (all hail the mighy DVD), I like her much more than I did. 'Sandblast' made me giggle so much Mum thought I was having a fit of some sort.

Love the relationship, hate that it ended.

Then again, I am a Jibbs fan also............

Great, now I'm conflicted.

Anyone else in the same situation?

yeah i think so too. but i heard a rumor mann's was red but she let it gray naturally (personally, i think it was to save trouble for mann's actress to dye it or wear an itchy wig or something)
