«I’m not interested in the image of a woman
treated as a sex object»

Cote de Pablo got her role in ‘Navy’ the most popular series in the US by chance.

Author: Angélica Martínez

María José ‘Cote’ de Pablo Fernández became famous thanks to her role in ‘Navy’ aired on La Sexta. The Chilean actress, who interprets Ziva David, an Israeli agent, said she got this role by surprise and almost by mistake. De Pablo left Chile when she was 9 and at 10 she was already studying drama and singing in Miami. Now she’s starring in the most popular series in the US, and is the Latin actress in vogue on the North American television.

Your character in the series is strong, intelligent and attractive. Has the image of women on television changed?
-I don’t think my character is a woman who tries to be sexy. Besides, I’m against that image: I’m not interested in a woman treated as a sex object. It’s rather superficial.

The series has grown in audience little by little
-We’ve managed to convince the public we’re the best television series (she laughs). Now everybody recognises me in the street.

But it happened by chance.
-Yes. I was at an audition for a Broadway musical and one of the series producers was there. I started doing a casting for the role of Ziva, and I got it.

Many actors complain about the long hours required for shooting a drama series
-We work ten months a year, six days a week, twelve hours on the trot every day. Nevertheless, we’re really privileged because we get paid very well for our work. I try to administer my free time and not complain, because being unemployed would be worse.

You’re not as daring as your character, are you?
-I’m quite a cowardly woman (laughing). I wouldn’t even dare to jump out of a plane with a parachute.

In the series there are a lot of action scenes. Do you dare to do them yourself or do you use a stunt double?
-I don’t use any stunt doubles. When I have to shoot a sequence requiring a lot of action, I rehearse beforehand so I won’t have an accident. In that sense I’m a bit of a masochist: I love the thrill of the adrenaline. Besides in my free time I do a lot of exercise. I’m an addict. I run two hours every day.

You’re Chilean. Have you suffered the stigma of being a Latin actress in Hollywood?
-If you let them label you then you suffer. I play an international character and I still haven’t been classified as Latin. The important thing is not to let a label limit your opportunities.

What do they say about you in your country?
-They’re proud of me and the series success.

Your family remains in Santiago, is it difficult living alone in a city like Los Angeles?
-When I signed the contract for ‘Navy’ I did so for six years, without even knowing what was going to happen. I don’t regret it, although I have lost things like the contact with my family.

The history of your career combines effort and luck.
-Nobody’s opened doors for me. Here, I’m just another immigrant. I entered by the back door. From the bottom. I’ve overcome obstacles and now I’m living an excellent professional experience. I’ve been climbing up the ladder. However, it hasn’t been easy.

Is it true you’re great fan of Spain?
-It’s true me grandparents were born here.
