A great Impression by Appreciator
There are certain people in our lives that enter for a fleeting moment, but somehow they are so special, they will remain in our hearts for eternity. Certain smells of her perfume, the surroundings we find ourselves in, or if we are lucky we are in the right place at the right time, turn and there is that person from the past, standing among the crowd and it takes our breath away. Kismet.
It was so long ago, Gibbs in his civvies, they all were in their civvies even the colonel. Gibbs asked all the other Marines if they want a drink before boarding the plane. The colonel, who happened to be of small stature smoking his cigar replied, "Great idea, Gibbs. Come on guys let's head over to that bar." Gibbs wasn't the first to notice her, she was so tiny and fragile looking. Gibbs thought of a scared rabbit in the middle of a glen, no bush to hide behind, but there she was and the fact that she had an aura of dismay struck his heart. He could not stop looking at her. Every so often she would glance around the room, like that rabbit, surveying the territory so she could make her escape quickly and that is exactly what happened. Gibbs turning to answer the colonel's question, turning back and she was gone. He thought to himself, "She is the rabbit that ran back inside the magician's hat." Being a sniper in the Marines, Gibbs had a marvelous talent, like a camera she became a photo to him. In his mind's eye he brought her back into view. She was plainly dressed, a sleeveless turtleneck, necklace and earrings to match. Her hands, was she wearing rings? This he could not remember for she had her hands under the book she was holding. What was it that fascinated him so about this young woman? The fact that she was wearing jeans and sneakers certainly did not make an impression, everyone nowadays wore comfortable clothes while traveling. Yet, to Gibbs she had an aura. It hit him like a flash of lightning, her eyes. It was her eyes.
As the colonel led his Marines back to the area so they could board the plane Gibbs kept looking around for this rabbit. He could not find this tiny creature among beautiful women that glanced his way, with that smile that said more than just a polite hello. Nope, that scared little rabbit vanished. Gibbs being Gibbs heard his mind and it was saying, "What the heck, what would I say to her anyway. I'm traveling with the colonel and about to be briefed for the next mission, what would I say?" As they proceeded to board the plane, the colonel naturally first, Gibbs lay back to be the last to board, still wishing for a brief glance, why he did not know. He did know that this would not be told to any of his fellow Marines. This was his secret. Last to board the plane, all the guys putting their carry-on in the top compartment, shuffling items to make every thing fit, everyone talking. Finally it was his chance to put his items in the compartment, all the other guys taking their seats and as he looked around the shuttle plane, he stopped in mid-air, his bag not quite all the way in and hoping no one noticed his hesitation. There she sat, her posture stiff and that scared rabbit was trapped and she knew it. Gibbs pretended that he had a little trouble with his bag to cover the "awe" that struck him.
