• Ducky has recently got some money and decides to tell Gibbs but not the others because he's afraid they might treat him differently and he has no idea what to do with it. After looking at the photo of the dead Marine's wife and children, Ducky decides to give some of the money to the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund, which provides college funding for the children of fallen marines.
  
  
• Ducky also leaves a will making Gibbs the executor of his estate and to split the money among his colleagues at NCIS, a nephew in Scotland and the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund.

• According to the episode's writers, the back story about Ducky's will was simply a way to acknowledge that the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund is David McCallum's real-life favorite charity. It's not intended to presage a death: at the time the episode aired, McCallum had just signed a contract renewal for two more years.

• Abby claims that Dynamite was used in the film "Hell Fighters" to put out the well fires. Dynamite is never used to put out oil well fires. Nitroglycerine is, due to it's highly explosive properties. It consumes virtually all the oxygen when set off, not only putting out the flame but preventing it's re-ignition for a few seconds. As a scientist, Abby's character should have known this fact. "The explosion created a vacuum and it sucked out all the oxygen and extinguished the fire," Abby explains. Burning thermite cannot be extinguished by oxygen deprivation because oxygen is contained in the thermite mix itself (as iron oxide). Therefore, thermite can even be ignited under water and sand.
