NCIS EPISODE RECAP
"REQUIEM"
airdate: November 6, 2007
written by: Tony Wharmby
directed by: Shane Brennan
SYNOPSIS
Gibbs finds himself on an emotional journey into his past when he agrees to help the childhood friend of his now-dead daughter. (CBS Press Release)
FUNNY MOMENTS

  • The first scene after the credits, Abby nagging him like a little child nagging her Daddy for an ice cream.

  • Ziva telling Tony that he only gazes at photos of women's body parts and Tony answering: "Since 1981 I have subscribed to National Geographic Magazine, some serious picture gazing right there!"

  • Abby taking photos; "Gibbs!" Gibbs turns around with a frustrated/could care less kinda smile. But It's Abby, way say no to her?

  • When Abby takes pictures of the team; DiNozzo looks like he's... in pain? Either way its hilarious!!

  • When McGee told him there is a young woman waiting for him and Gibbs asked: "About?" McGee thought he was asking about her age.

  • Abby tells Gibbs and Ducky to get out of her lab; "Sorry... this isn't my lab" Abby wasn't in her lab at the time.

  • This is ground control to Major Tom.

  • Tony's liberally alliterative linguistic license.

  • Memory of funny moments: Gibbs flashbacks on kids laughing.

  • Gibbs' first sip of Maddie's coffee and trying to swallow it.

DEVELOPMENT/INSIGHTS
  • The Giblets know about Kelly: we knew that Ziva knew. And we assumed that once Director and Ducky knew, everyone in the team would know (Abby, Tony and McGee). We know that Fornell already knew (because he knew what buttons to press when his own daughter went missing in escaped and the ex-wives know from the legal papers for marriage and divorce about all prior marriages and divorces, to prevent bigamy).

  • That Gibbs was a very private man and keeps his past close to his chest. The fact that Ducky didn't even know about his first wife shows that.

  • Ducky knew all of 3 of Gibbs' ex-wives.

  • So the secret was known but not discussed. We know that Gibbs was disconnected enough to not recall the name of his daughter's best friend yet knew the girl's father: so that caused the girl to doubt her own status as best friend. But she has been loyal to Kelly all the years and clearly does mourn the loss. We know that the move to Camp Pendleton was right before Gibbs' deployment to Iraq, so Gibbs was based in Washington and has had the house since he lived with Shannon.

  • His house actually has memories of the wife/child and the garden was the time capsule burial ground. Gibbs reburying the time capsule means....well, what? That he is joining in with the time capsule idea/sharing the fun? Burying the past as he buries the capsule? (very literal allegory, if that is not too oxymoronic).

  • Seeing how well Kelly's friend turned out reassures Gibbs somehow. Maddie lacks a dad and turns to Gibbs when she needs a hero. But she doesn't seem like recurring character material....

  • Jen: jealous of the girl? Merely curious? Can read Gibbs like a book?

  • Tony: defuses situations with idiotic behaviour which irritates but distracts them. Does not do it with Jen: is straight and serious with her. The Monty Python book of management styles must be Tony's guiding light? Tony has a love of punning and extraordinary words: "discombobulated" "perturbed". Ziva has bionic hearing: she can hear a fly buzzing over the sound of Johnny Cash lamenting.

  • McGee just does not give up. Not at all. He keeps looking and thinking and thinking and thinking...and then Jen outsmarts them all: go Jen! Abby is a mess. She needs help. She falls apart at a hint of distress for Gibbs. She personifies his angst (well, it sounds good, doesn't it!) even in the face of his stoicism.

  • Gibbs breaks his own rules. "Don't assume" is the big rule breakage in this episode.

  • Of course it's a very sad and moving episode to see this human side of Gibbs so rawly exposed.

EPISODE TRIVIA

  • TITLE NOTES: REQUIEM "Give rest O Lord to your handmaid who has fallen asleep"

  • Our speculation as to requiem music is at the foot of this page: but the song for this episode (the requiem remembrance music) is "Hush little baby, don't say a word. Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird" sung by Gibbs. It is the song that Kelly played for the piano competition: we heard the tape of her performance at the end of Ex-Files. It made Mann cry. But in this episode, Gibbs cheers up a bit.

  • The original episode description was: "Gibbs helps out the best friend of his deceased daughter Kelly. She is stalked by a guy and Gibbs is the only one who she thinks can help her."

  • Check out: NCIS Underwater Stunt - Requiem and see how this underwater scene was shot. Apparently it wasn't computer generated after all, but all the same very complicated and very hard work.

  • Anne-Marie Johnson, known for her recurring role as "Congresswoman Bobbi Latham" on JAG. In JAG, she was (in 18 episodes!) never seen in a uniform, NCIS finally made it.

  • Diamond Farnsworth, the stunt co-ordinator for NCIS and Mark Harmon's stunt double, has been nominated for a 2008 Emmy Award for his work on this episode.

  • "All I Need" by Mat Kearney plays in the photo album scene at Maddie's house.

  • On Maddies MySpace page we hear "The Kiss" from Karmina.

  • Brenna Radding plays Gibbs daughter "Kelly" beginning with this 5th season.
Before, "Kelly" was played by Mary Mouser.

  • On the commentary on the DVD, Mark Harmon said that the scene when Tony went back down and Gibbs was still in the car, disturbed his mom a bit when she saw it.

  • Nick Spano was on Even Stevens as Donny Stevens, now he plays an obsessive sergeant trying to get the smuggled money.

What music should Gibbs have chosen for Shannon and Kelly's funeral?
Perhaps John Tavener's: Song for Athene
(Athene was a young friend of the composer who was killed in a cycle accident in Greece)
Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
Remember me O lord, when you come into your kingdom.
Give rest O Lord to your handmaid, who has fallen asleep.
The choir of saints have found the well-spring of life, and door of paradise.
Life: a shadow and a dream.
Weeping at the grave creates the song:
Alleluia. Come, enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you.
(This is what the choristers sang while Princess Diana's coffin was carried out of Westminster Abbey at the end of her funeral)

Or perhaps Amazing Grace - bagpipe version of the Royal Scots Guard - a very haunting version, or maybe the classic Irish song often sung at funerals 'Danny Boy'. But seeing as how Gibbs is a bit classic Amazing Grace perhaps.......

  • Another song that we would currently find perfect but was invented then is Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. It's perfect, sad, hopeful, nice, good for the future. it would have been perfect and now would be considered immediately, but then was probably less known. the words are fairly suited but not all completely, however listening to it, it's perfect and is a haunting song.

Lyrics are as follows:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah (repeat 7 more times)
Hallelu-u-jah.

Requiem aeternum dona eis, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
(Eternal rest grant unto them, and let perpetual light shine upon them.)
Pie Jesu qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem aeternum.
(O sweet Jesu, who takes away the sin of the world, grant them eternal rest.)

"Give rest O Lord to your handmaid who has fallen asleep"

"Rest calm, O body pure and holy for I shall no longer bewail thee.
And bring thou me to rest." (Johann Sebastian Bach: St John's Passion: Ruht Wohl)

  • Or perhaps the piper's lament, a very haunting piece for both military and civilian funerals: The Flower Of Scotland

  • Or perhaps the sung version of psalm 23 - "The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. He maketh me down to lie in pastures sweet; He leadeth me beside the still waters; Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou has furnished a table before in the presence of mine enemies; thou dost my head with oil anoint and my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever." (It has to be this idea that you end up all 'living' with each other in heaven that would appeal to Gibbs: a reunion with Shannon and Kelly and a rather nice eternal life. Take your comfort where you find it.)

The words of Omar Khayyam from the Rubaiyyat would be quite fitting, although they have no music as far as I'm aware:
'The moving finger writes
And having writ moves on
Nor all thy piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line
Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it'

  • Or simply the Ave Maria sung by a tenor say Pavarotti or Josep Carreras (he's Catalan and his name always appears in the Catalan version of José which is Josep) "Ave Maria, gratia plena, dominus tecum, benedictimus tu"

  • Or epitaph from one of the WWI poems: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori (how sweet and fitting it is to die for one's country) - this could be ironic if one thinks about it, since this how death is sold to the armed forces, that martyrdom is valid when one fights for one's country; and mayhap Gibbs could wonder if the time spent away from his family as a marine sniper were worth it, that perhaps if he hadn't been fighting for the country, then perhaps Shannon and Kelly might still be alive today - food for thought ¿?

Dose anyone know why they got a new actress to play Kelly? it use to be a girl called Marry Mouser. Also some of the flash backs are different to the ones that they show on Hiatus, like when Gibbs is going of to war. is that just a mistake or was it on purpose?

Hello, there's a music ( only piano ) kinda sad genre, in the ep ' requiem ' during Gibb's flashbacks to kelly.
And the music is also played in the ep : 24 of the season 7 at 38:minutes 00 seconds, altho it's a very short version.

I'd be dying to know which is this music !

Thanks
