Enigma

Synopsis:
Gibbs risks his career when his former commanding officer is accused of stealing funds.

New Character Development / Insights:
  • We see the relationship between Gibbs and officers. We see the extent to which Gibbs' unit friends functioned as family. We see his knowledge of the personal life (eg holiday cabin location). We see the respect that Gibbs maintains for his former CO even in the face of the man's mental illness that is putting lives at risk.
  • We see the extent to which Fornell trusts Gibbs, and the respect that Fornell has for Gibbs' military background (which we get the distinct impression that Fornell does not share at all). We see Fornell's anxiety for Gibbs' safety clash with his respect for Gibbs' judgement.
  • We see the naughty sense of humour of Gibbs when he evades the tail (FBI agents who are following him). He does it with style and makes them look silly.
  • Abby believes in "dating older", more mature people, as a sign of maturity in herself. Her oldest date was 65. Tony's oldest was 26. She wonders if it wasn't that Tony was dating younger, but perhaps his girls were dating older.

Funny Moments:
  • Fornell: "Much as I'd like to, I'm not going to let him shoot you Gibbs"

  • Ducky: "I don't suppose any of you thought to take a photo before you ran screaming from the cabin".
Tony: "Hey. That was not screaming. That was yelling. Loudly".
  • Kate at Ryan's cabin: Do all Marines build boats? Tony: Only the ones who've been married a few times...The others can afford to buy one!"

  • Gibbs sees a bomb but it doesn't blow up right away. After a long wait Ducky shows up and Kate says "Gibbs thought he saw a bomb." They talk for a few minutes and finally Kate says "You need glasses Gibbs" But the moment those words leave her mouth the house blows up!!

Trivia:
  • Gibbs Rules: Rule #12 - Never date a coworker.
  • Terry O'Quinn had a recurring role on JAG as Admiral Thomas Boone and was defended by Rabb many times in court.

This is by far one of my favorite episodes in the series. It is rare for me to choose favorites, but this one was something really special. We got to see a side of Gibbs that up to that point, and really from this point on we dont see too often. Sure we know Gibbs develops as being self sacrificing and loyal but this was truly an intense story line. Loved every part it; from the team rallying behind him, to the scene where Gibbs reams Tony for 'lifting, borrowing, stealing' his cell phone lol. Loved it all.
