'Face to Face' by CatherineYetiveThis is a featured page

She still felt the whiz of the bullet flying inches from her head, the asphalt burning her knees and palms as she fought to get the gun into her hands. She still saw Andy Hoffman's face after she shot him three, four, five times… felt his dead weight on her as he exhaled for the last time...The unfamiliar trickle down the side of her face… her unique shade of blood on her sparkling white top…Gibbs' warm hand on her face...the bright yellow tape surrounding the crime scene- the one she created…

Ziva felt Tim's eyes on her, but didn't look up to meet his gaze.

Ziva had never looked this frumpy- her hair and clothes were not carefully cared for like usual, and her eyes were red and puffy. Instead, she’d used her fingers only to get her hair out of her face- revealing her bullet grazed temple- and retrieved clothes from a drawer, too distracted to even think about opening her closet.

But Tim saw past her disheveled appearance- even though he thought Ziva was beautiful anyway- and saw the fear and emptiness in her eyes. He knew what it felt like to almost die, to accept 'certain death' and not receive it. Tim knew the attitude that followed- the 'Why didn't I die?' questions, the paranoia, and the depression...

He knew he had to say something to Ziva- let her know she wasn't alone- but how? What would he even say?

Ziva got up suddenly for her desk and made a beeline for the elevator. Tim followed her and got inside before the doors closed.

Tim and Ziva locked eyes for a moment before she broke the connection and looked away. Ziva continued to hold onto the tears that she almost lost control of in the bullpen.

Silence hung heavily between the two as Tim fought with his inner self. He finally reached across Ziva and switched off the elevator.

Ziva looked at Tim in surprise. He exhaled and broke the silence.

“Ziva...I'm worried about you,” Tim blurted.

“What are you worried about, McGee? I am perfectly fine.” Even Ziva couldn't believe her own lie.

“Your eyes glazing over when you should be working? The blank expression? Ziva, you are not okay.”

Ziva opened her mouth to reply but Tim held up his hand.

“You need to know you're...you are not alone.”

Ziva scoffed. “Alone? I am not alone. I am here, every day, with you, and Tony, and Gibbs...”

“That's not what I mean. I know how you feel right now...I've been there. It's okay to be vulnerable.”

Ziva turned away as she came dangerously close to crying.

“It is never okay to be vulnerable, McGee.”

Tim felt frustration bubbling inside him as he grabbed Ziva's shoulders and turned her so they were face to face.

“You don't always have to be the cold Mossad assassin all the time!”

Tim went silent, wondering where all of this was coming from.

Ziva broke Tim’s hold, her breathing more labored as she took a step backwards. A groan escaped Tim’s lips as Ziva lunged, pinning him against the wall. Tim’s pain turned to surprise as Ziva pressed her lips against his.

Ziva clasped her palm over his, intertwining their fingers; with her other hand she tousled Tim's well-kept hair. Instinctively, Tim cradled Ziva's head with his free hand. Ziva closed her eyes and let her knees go weak, letting herself fall into him.

They started to slide onto the floor before Tim pulled away. He took his hand from under Ziva's and caressed her cheek, being careful not to touch her injured temple. Ziva leaned her head into his palm.

“This is not what you want,” Tim breathed, as their noses touched. He looked into her eyes intensely- They didn't look as empty anymore.

Ziva's tears finally began to fall, and Tim wiped them away. She sniffled and pulled his hands away before pushing herself upright and backing up to the opposite wall of the elevator.

Tim straightened his clothes and hair, taking a deep breath before standing up and switching the elevator back on.

Ziva met Tim's eyes again. “I am sorry...”

Tim shook his head. “It's okay.” He tried to smile a little and Ziva returned it.

“Are we okay?” Tim looked at her nervously.

“Yes, we are okay. I am glad you are so...understanding, McGee.”

Ziva couldn't help but feel a small ache in her chest as they stepped off of the elevator.

What if it was what I wanted?
